A Sudden Discovery on the Shore
A golden retriever paws at the slick, dark skin of a beached dolphin, his head tilted low as he inspects the debris clinging to the animal’s fins. The dog backs away, barking sharply at the wet sand, then sprints up the beach toward a man standing by a red car. He circles the man, his tail wagging in urgent, wide arcs, before bolting back toward the water’s edge.
The man follows, his pace quickening as he tracks the dog back to the surf. He reaches the shoreline and immediately drops to his knees beside the large, grey form. The dolphin lies motionless, weighted down by thick, tangled fishing nets that wrap tightly around its body and snout. Multiple plastic bottles are wedged into the creature’s mouth, choking its ability to breathe or move.
The Careful Extraction Begins
The man reaches out, placing both hands on the dolphin’s flank to steady it against the rolling tide. He works his fingers into the mesh, pulling at the plastic bottles that have become fused with the netting. One by one, he eases the bottles from the creature’s jaw, tossing them onto the sand where the dog waits, watching intently.
The man’s movements are slow and deliberate, his hands working the coarse, abrasive nylon away from the dolphin’s sensitive skin. The wet net is heavy, caked with algae and sand, requiring constant adjustment as he navigates the tangled layers. Every time a piece of plastic comes free, he moves to the next, his eyes focused on the tight coils cinched around the animal’s fins.
Restoring Mobility to the Stranded Animal
A second person joins the effort, sliding into the shallow water to help clear the remaining debris. Together, they use yellow sponges to scrub away the thick green algae that has built up on the dolphin’s dorsal side. They rub firmly but rhythmically, clearing patches of skin until the grey surface beneath shines under the bright overhead sun.
The tension in the group shifts as the final strands of netting are pulled free. The man and his companion grab the dolphin by its sides, their muscles tensing as they begin to push the heavy animal toward the deeper water. The dolphin remains steady, its body finally clear of the synthetic mess that had kept it pinned to the beach.
Returning to the Deep
They nudge the creature forward, guiding it away from the shoreline and into the rhythmic pull of the waves. The dog splashes through the surf, keeping pace as the two men support the dolphin in the rising water. After a final push, the dolphin regains its equilibrium and pushes off into the blue.
The two men stand in the waist-deep water, watching the dark silhouette glide away from the shore. The golden retriever stands on the sand, his nose twitching as he looks out at the open water. The tide washes over their feet, leaving the stretch of sand empty of everything but the discarded plastic pile left behind.
