A Lone Duck Waiting Near The Asphalt
The mother duck presses her white, feathered body into the tall, dry grass at the edge of the road. Her head remains tilted, watching the horizon as a dark SUV rolls past her position.
Beside her, three small, golden-yellow ducklings huddle near her flank, their tiny legs buried in the green stalks. They do not wander or venture toward the gray pavement.
A vehicle slows down and pulls onto the narrow shoulder. A man in an orange polo shirt steps out of the car, his eyes fixed on the group huddled near the road.
He walks toward them with his knees bent, moving slowly so as not to startle the parent. He reaches out, his fingers touching the white feathers along the duck’s back.
Attending To A Hidden Injury
The man pulls a small bottle from his pocket. He tips it, letting a clear, blue liquid pour slowly onto the duck’s wing area.
He works with precision, rubbing the liquid into the plumage. The duck remains perfectly still, her orange bill pointed forward while the man maneuvers around her.
Next, he produces a silver aerosol canister. He shakes it and presses the nozzle, spraying a thick, white foam over the area he just treated.
The white froth clings to the feathers, puffing up as it settles. He watches the progress of the foam, his hands moving with measured, careful intention.
Securing The Mother And Her Young
He reaches for a roll of wide, bright-blue medical tape. He pulls a length of the material, wrapping it firmly around the mother duck’s midsection.
He pulls the tape taut, smoothing it down until it sits flush against her body. The blue band contrasts sharply against her stark white feathers.
After checking the tension of the wrapping, he reaches into his pocket and pulls out a handful of grain. He drops the feed onto the patch of dirt right in front of the group.
The ducklings immediately rush forward, their beaks pecking at the scattered seeds. The mother duck stretches her neck, joining them for the meal.
The camera captures the scene from above as the group continues to eat. The blue tape stays firmly in place around the mother’s wings, and the ducklings cluster tightly around her, continuing to feed in the safety of the grass.
