An Unlikely Encounter On The Roadside
A mother deer lies motionless on the gravel shoulder of a mountain road, flanked by her two small, speckled fawns. A dense, dark mass of thousands of ticks covers a significant patch of the mother deer’s fur near her shoulder and ribs.
Traffic flows steadily on the pavement just a few feet away, with white and black vehicles passing at speed. The mother deer keeps her head elevated, tracking the movement of the cars, yet her body remains pinned to the earth by the weight of the parasite cluster.
The fawns stay pressed against their mother’s flank, their own bodies quiet and low to the ground. They are small and still, seemingly aware that moving might disrupt the precarious balance their mother is maintaining.
The Intervention Begins
A man pulls a black SUV onto the gravel, parking it directly between the deer and the flow of traffic. He steps out of the driver’s side door holding a small white bag, his pace measured as he walks toward the animals.
He reaches the mother deer and drops to his knees on the rocks. He pulls a canister from the bag and begins spraying the affected area on the deer’s side. A fine mist coats the dark, moving patch of ticks.
The deer shifts her head slightly but does not attempt to stand or run away. She watches the man’s hands as he works, the man focusing entirely on the density of the infestation.
Removing The Parasite Burden
Once the area is coated, the man begins to peel away the dead and dying parasites. He uses his hands and a cloth, wiping firmly to clear the dark crust from the deer’s coat.
With each stroke, he pulls away clumps of debris, revealing the light-colored fur underneath. He tosses the gathered material onto the gravel, ensuring the ticks are pulled away from the deer’s sensitive skin.
He takes his time, carefully clearing the edges where the cluster was thickest. He moves with a steady rhythm, wiping the skin down until the patch is visibly thinner and the underlying coat is exposed.
The Final Assessment
The man reaches into his supplies and pulls out a wide, white bandage. He wraps it firmly around the mother deer’s torso, smoothing the adhesive edges to keep it snug against her body.
The deer remains on the ground throughout the process, her breathing rhythmic and shallow. The fawns shift their positions, one pressing closer to the man’s hands as he secures the final fold of the wrap.
The man pauses, placing a hand gently on the deer’s neck as the bandage holds the treated site protected. He looks at the mother and her fawns one last time. He stands up, backing away slowly, leaving the three animals resting together on the quiet edge of the road.
