Inside the shadows — Once safe, he doesn’t eat the bread himself. Instead, he kneels down to offer it to a shivering, hungry little girl sitting on the dirt floor, who clearly hasn’t eaten in days. They sit together in the dim light, quietly sharing the loaf while the baker, having tracked him down, stands outside the door, listening in silence.
The old man’s expression shifts from pure anger to shock and heartbreak as he realizes what is actually going on inside. He turns around, his demeanor completely changed, and walks away into the storm to do something he hadn’t planned on.
A change of heart — A short time later, he returns to the shack with a wheelbarrow packed full of food, supplies, and a warm blanket. He hands the bags to the boy, refusing any payment, and makes sure they both have something to drink.
The story doesn’t end there, though. A week later, the same boy is back at the bakery, but this time he isn’t running away. He is wearing an apron, standing right next to the old man, finally having found a place to belong.
