A Persistent Tug at the Leash
A golden retriever drops the leash he is holding and begins to nudge his owner’s hand with his snout. He paces back and forth near the gas pump, his tail sweeping in quick, rhythmic motions.
The dog trots toward the road, glancing back every few steps to ensure his owner is following his lead. He keeps his pace brisk, his paws clicking against the asphalt as he moves away from the station.
They travel along the edge of the forest, the trees blurring into a long, green wall. The dog does not stop to sniff the grass or investigate the road noise.
A Discovery on the Shoulder
The golden retriever stops abruptly on the shoulder of the road. His body is rigid as he stares down at a patch of weeds near the white painted line.
A small, white puppy lies motionless inside a circular, coarse-mesh fishing net. The puppy is curled into a tight ball, his eyes darting toward the adult dog as he approaches.
The adult dog lowers his nose to the netting, sniffing the perimeter of the trap. He pulls at the ropes with his teeth, tugging at the coarse material in an attempt to dislodge the puppy.
The Mechanical Release
The man reaches the side of the road and kneels down into the gravel. He pulls a pair of heavy-duty metal cutters from his jacket pocket.
He grips the handles of the tool, his knuckles turning white as he clamps the jaws around the thick nylon cord. With a quick, sharp squeeze, the line snaps, sending a small vibration through the net.
The man continues to work his way around the circumference of the circle, cutting segment by segment. He pauses to stroke the puppy’s ears, his hands moving with measured, careful pressure.
The puppy shifts his weight, sliding his paws toward the edge of the now-loosened barrier. He blinks as the final strand of rope gives way.
The Final Connection
The man pulls the last piece of the netting away from the puppy’s back. The small creature pushes himself up on unsteady legs, shaking his fur as the weight of the trap falls away.
The golden retriever presses his head against the puppy, licking the top of his skull. The puppy leans into the larger dog, his tail giving a tiny, hesitant wag.
The man reaches down to gather the puppy into his arms. The golden retriever stands close, his nose pressed against the man’s coat as they turn to walk back toward the parked car.
