The Puppy Trapped Above The Raging River
Two small dogs cling to the jagged, splintered remains of a wooden bridge. A torrential rain lashes down from a dark, heavy sky. The wooden planks beneath them have been torn away by the rising, muddy river surging below. The space between the surviving sections of the bridge has widened into a dangerous gap. The current crashes against the wooden support pilings, shaking the entire structure with every rhythmic, violent impact.
One puppy stands on the higher, more stable section of the wood. It watches the other dog, which is lower down, holding onto the vertical support beam with its front paws. The lower dog paws at the wood, trying to gain purchase on the slippery, wet surface. The water churns inches from its hind legs, splashing up against the wood. Every time the river swells, the dog loses its footing, dangling precariously above the torrent.
The Human Intervention
A man in a bright yellow raincoat steps into the frame. He moves quickly, his boots splashing into the wet mud. His eyes are fixed on the dogs. He shouts out toward the water, his arms outstretched as he navigates the uneven, broken remnants of the walkway. He reaches the edge of the collapse, ignoring the way the structure dips and groans under his added weight. He leans forward, his chest pressed against the remaining railing.
A second person, wearing a dark jacket, follows him closely. She drops to a crouch, her hands braced on the wood for balance. The man reaches out with both hands, his fingers outstretched, targeting the puppy that is struggling to climb up the post. The dog looks up, its ears pinned back against its skull. The man grips the puppy firmly around its chest and midsection. With a steady pull, he hauls the small dog up from the edge of the river.
Securing The Safe Return
Once the puppy is off the edge, the man tucks it tightly against his chest. He turns his body away from the collapsing bridge. He walks back across the wet, broken planks, his eyes watching his footing. The rescued puppy tucks its head into the crook of the man’s arm, pressing its nose against his yellow coat. The rain continues to pour, soaking their fur and the man’s bright gear.
He reaches the solid ground at the end of the walkway. He stops and shifts his grip on the puppy. He holds the small dog close, supporting its weight with one arm while the other remains wrapped securely around its middle. The second dog, which was safe on the higher plank, trots over to greet them. It presses its nose against the puppy being held in the man’s arms.
A Quiet Moment On The Bank
The man stands still on the muddy bank. He adjusts his hold again, moving his hands so he can stroke the puppy’s head and ears. He talks to the dogs in a low, even tone. The rain continues to fall, creating a soft, rhythmic pitter-patter against the trees and the mud. The man looks down at the puppy in his arms, his mouth curving slightly as he observes the relief on the animal’s face.
The rescued puppy keeps its eyes locked on the man’s face. It lets out a small movement, its head nuzzling into the man’s chest. The second dog stands right beside them, its body pressed against the man’s legs, looking up at its companion. The camera lingers on the trio, framed against the backdrop of the grey, swelling river and the dark, wet forest. The man lowers his head, resting his cheek briefly against the top of the puppy’s head while his hands continue to rub along its shivering back.
