The Unseen History of the Pool
A hand firmly rests on a shoulder, then abruptly shoves the elderly woman forward, sending her plunging into the blue water of the swimming pool. The sound of splashing echoes against the nearby loungers where other members sit in their white attire. The woman in the robe stands at the edge, her arms crossed over her chest, peering down at the person treading water below.
She looks down, her chin tilted slightly upward. Her gaze remains fixed on the water. The woman in the pool reaches a hand out to the tiled ledge, the fabric of her yellow robe trailing in the water. The woman standing above her speaks, her words sharp and punctuated by the movement of her hands.
She gestures toward the loungers and the surrounding area. She emphasizes that the pool is for members only and that assistance is not permitted. She turns slightly, her stance rigid, her sunglasses held in one hand as she gestures for the woman to look at the signs posted around the club deck.
A Memory Carved in Stone
The woman in the water pulls herself upward, her movements slow and deliberate. She reaches for her yellow robe, the fabric heavy and dripping. She speaks calmly, her voice steady against the backdrop of the quiet pool deck. She mentions her late husband and a specific date, 1991, carved into the front gate of the facility.
Her hands move as she speaks, gesturing toward her own face and then toward the expansive grounds of the club. She explains that her husband transformed this entire property from a simple field of peanuts into the place where they currently stand. She mentions her initials, E.W., as she brushes a stray hair from her temple.
The woman standing above her shifts her weight. Her posture loosens, the initial sharpness fading as she listens. The woman in the water continues to explain the origin of the club. She talks about the labor and the time invested into creating the space that now serves the members.
The Unexpected Arrival
Two men in uniforms walk toward the pool, their boots clicking against the hard surface of the deck. One of the men holds a clipboard, his expression unyielding. They stop beside the woman in the robe, forming a wall between her and the person in the water.
The man in the center looks at the woman in the water and then shifts his focus to the woman in the robe. He apologizes, his voice low and firm. He speaks directly to the elderly woman, then turns to address the younger member. He explains that the club is under new ownership and that the woman in the water holds the original rights to the facility.
The younger woman stares at the men in disbelief. She looks down at the pool once more, her mouth slightly parted. The man informs her that her membership is now revoked, effective immediately. He gestures toward the exit, his hand indicating the path away from the pool area. The two men turn and begin to walk toward the main building. The younger woman follows them as they move across the patio, leaving the empty loungers and the glistening water behind them.
