A Struggle in the Drylands
Crows descend on the cracked, parched earth, their wings beating the air as they surround a large fish trapped in a tiny pool of muddy water. The fish thrashes, its gills expanding and contracting against the dry heat while the birds peck rhythmically at its scales. Their sharp beaks strike the fish’s side, and the creature’s mouth gapes wide in a silent protest against the barren terrain.
A golden retriever enters the frame, his coat catching the harsh, flat sunlight. He stands firm, his hackles slightly raised, and lets out a low, vibrating growl as his upper lip pulls back to reveal his teeth. The birds scatter, flapping upward to avoid the dog as he approaches the edge of the shallow, sun-baked hole.
The Rescue Plan
The dog shifts his attention to the surrounding environment, his nose twitching as he surveys the cracked ground. He trots over to a nearby tree, snapping a branch off with his teeth and carrying it back to the muddy puddle. After pacing the area, he begins gathering eucalyptus leaves and twigs, dropping them into a woven basket. He nudges the foliage into place, carefully constructing a temporary container for the fish.
Moving with deliberate intent, the dog trots back to the fish, which remains pinned in the dwindling water. He lowers his head, gently clamping his jaws around the fish’s middle. He lifts the creature from the mud and deposits it into the waiting basket. The fish lies still as the dog stands over it, his tail giving a slow, rhythmic wag.
The Journey to Water
The dog grips the basket’s handle between his teeth and sets off across the dry, cracked earth. The birds follow, circling overhead, but the dog keeps his pace, the basket swinging slightly with his stride. He passes a fallen log and eventually reaches a small, grey mat laid out on the flat desert floor. He drops the basket there, inspects it with a quick sniff, and then trots off once more to retrieve another item.
Upon returning to the puddle, he finds another fish. He repeats the process, using his paws to scoop the creature into the basket with meticulous care. He lifts the basket, water sloshing over the sides as he maneuvers the new passenger toward the shoreline. The waves lap at his paws, and he sets the container down on the wet, dark sand.
Back to the Deep
He reaches into the basket and lifts the fish out, carrying it to the water’s edge. As he releases his grip, the fish flips its tail once, catching the current of the incoming wave. The dog leaps back, his front paws landing in the surf as he watches the fish submerge and disappear into the blue expanse.
The dog walks into the ocean, his body sinking into the waves until only his head and shoulders remain above the surface. He leans forward, his nose just inches from the water’s edge, watching the movement beneath the ripples. A fish surfaces briefly, breaking the water with a splash. The dog watches as the creature disappears into the depths, then turns and paddles back toward the sand, his ears slick against his head.
