A Sudden Confrontation on the Pier
A man in a leather vest grabs a red toolbox from the wooden planks of a fishing pier. He stands nose-to-nose with an older man holding a fishing rod. The younger man points a finger at the older man’s chest and begins shouting. He demands the keys to a nearby truck while holding the stolen toolbox.
The older man stands firm, gripping his rod as the wind blows across the water. His mustache does not twitch as the younger man threatens him with a swim. The younger man leans in closer, his voice rising in volume against the sound of the ocean waves. He waves his hands, gesturing toward the truck parked in the distance.
The Tables Turn In Seconds
The older man steps forward, showing no signs of backing away. The fisherman suddenly shifts his weight and catches the younger man off guard. With a swift, practiced movement, he swings his arm and knocks the man toward the edge of the pier. The younger man loses his balance and plunges into the dark, churning water below with a loud splash.
The older man remains on the wooden boards, looking down into the water. He reaches down and picks up his navy blue cap, turning it over in his hands. He holds the hat up toward the sky, revealing the white embroidery that reads “USS Ranger, Gunnery Officer, 1971 to 1999.” He watches as the younger man struggles in the surf below.
A Rescue and a Resolution
The fisherman uncoils a long, thick rope with a red life ring attached to the end. He swings the ring over the side of the pier, watching as it lands near the man in the water. He pulls on the line, dragging the shivering, soaked man toward the wooden pilings. The man reaches out, grabbing hold of the ladder to pull himself back onto the deck.
Once on the pier, the younger man stands there, dripping wet and shivering in the breeze. The fisherman walks over and hands him a dry, beige towel. The young man wraps the fabric tightly around his shoulders. The fisherman pulls his phone from his pocket and holds it to his ear while pacing away from the man. He continues his phone conversation, looking out toward the horizon while the man sits on the bench, huddled under the towel.
