A Sudden Halt in the Street
The mallard duck paces back and forth across the circular metal grate, her orange webbed feet clicking against the wet, gray asphalt. She stops, tilting her head toward the metal slats, and lets out a soft, low-pitched quack. Her tail feathers twitch as she looks toward the passing cars.
She moves in tight circles, her body language agitated as she keeps returning to the center of the drain. She peers into the dark gaps between the bars, her neck stretching downward until it is fully extended. When she pulls back, she spreads her wings wide, flapping them against the damp air before tucking them back against her sides.
The Woman Approaches
A woman wearing a charcoal blazer and black heels walks down the center of the road, her eyes fixed on the scene. She slows her pace as she nears the drain, her hands moving down toward her waist as she prepares to squat. She reaches the edge of the grate and lowers her body, bending her knees until she is eye-level with the mother duck.
The woman extends a hand, palm open, offering a gentle gesture toward the bird. The duck shifts her weight, her beak opening and closing as she watches the woman’s fingers. The woman studies the metal bars, her fingers tracing the outline of the heavy iron frame where it meets the road surface.
The Careful Intervention
The woman grips the edges of the metal grate with both hands, her knuckles whitening as she pulls upward. The heavy iron shifts, clanking against the pavement as she lifts one side, pivoting it until it rests on its edge. She leans forward, her shoulders dropping deep into the opening of the drain, her arms disappearing into the darkness beneath the street.
The mother duck stands just inches away, her head bobbing rhythmically as the woman feels around in the shadows of the sewer. The woman’s hands emerge, gently cupping a tiny, wet, yellow-and-brown creature. She brings it to the surface, its small wings fluttering as she sets it down on the wet pavement.
She reaches down again, repeating the motion, bringing up another duckling and then another, until a small, shivering pile of fluff gathers on the asphalt. She moves with calculated, slow movements, ensuring she does not startle the ducklings or their mother.
The Family Reunited
As the final duckling is placed on the road, the mother duck lets out a series of quick, high-pitched quacks. She nudges the group of ducklings with her beak, her body pushing them toward the edge of the curb. The ducklings follow in a tight line, their wet down beginning to clump as they waddle away from the drain.
The woman stands up slowly, her hands brushing against her blazer to remove the grit from the sewer. She remains in a crouched position for a moment longer, watching as the mother duck leads her offspring toward the grass near the trees. She tracks their movement, her head tilted as they navigate the edge of the wet road. She smiles, her eyes tracking the last of the ducklings as they disappear into the shadows of the foliage, leaving the dark, empty circle of the drain behind on the street.
