Hedgehog Finds Safe Shelter After Being Freed From Plastic Debris

A Discovery Along the Roadside

A small, spiky shape shifted slowly in the tall green grass beside a narrow road. It was a hedgehog, struggling against a tangle of white plastic rings that had caught across its back and neck. The plastic bit deeply into the animal’s natural camouflage, pinning its movement and leaving it vulnerable to the passing traffic nearby.

A woman approached the roadside, her hands moving instinctively toward her chest. She stopped just a few feet away, her eyes fixed on the struggling creature. She crouched down, keeping her movements slow and deliberate as the hedgehog remained huddled in the damp grass. The only sound was the faint rustle of the leaves and the distant hum of the rural landscape.

The Delicate Process of Liberation

She reached out, her fingers hovering near the hedgehog to offer a sense of stability. Her voice stayed low and steady, a soft murmur directed at the small animal. She checked her pockets and produced a pair of small, sharp scissors.

With precise focus, she positioned the blade beneath the first loop of the thick plastic. She held the base of the scissors against the animal’s quills, ensuring the sharp edge remained tilted away from the creature’s skin. The plastic snapped with a quiet pop as the tension released.

She moved to the next loop, repeating the motion with surgical care. Her hands remained calm, never jerking or pulling, as she systematically dismantled the trap. The last of the plastic rings fell away into the grass, leaving the hedgehog’s back clear once more. She set the scissors aside, her fingers brushing lightly against the creature’s spines as it shifted, finally unencumbered.

A Gentle Path Toward Safety

The woman scooped the hedgehog up, cradling it in her cupped palms. She stood slowly, tucking the animal against her yellow sweater to keep it shielded from the cool breeze. The hedgehog tucked its head inward as she walked back to her waiting car.

Once inside, she wrapped the animal in a soft, dry towel. She folded the edges over gently, creating a snug enclosure on her lap as she shifted the car into gear. The wheels crunched over the gravel as she pulled away, leaving the empty patch of grass behind.

She continued down the winding road, one hand resting on the towel-wrapped bundle. The hedgehog remained still, tucked into the warmth of the fabric. She pulled the vehicle to a stop at the base of a stone building, turning off the engine. She stepped out, pulling the bundled hedgehog against her chest as she approached the heavy green wooden door.

She walks up the stone stairs to the entrance, the hedgehog held securely in the center of the beige towel, its nose twitching ever so slightly as it rests in her arms.
