A Frantic Struggle Against the Mesh
A mother goose presses her chest against the green plastic fencing, her wings flared and caught in the rigid diamond-patterned grid. Her neck stretches upward, her beak opening wide to release a series of sharp, rhythmic honks that echo across the water. Beneath her, two yellow goslings shuffle in the tight space, their small feet paddling against the dirt. They look up, heads tilting toward the trapped parent, their own chirps blending into the chaotic chorus.
Traffic rushes by on the asphalt just a few feet away, the sound of tires on pavement humming against the frantic calls of the birds. The goose pulls against the plastic, her body shifting but failing to gain any clearance. Every time she tries to beat her wings, the netting catches her feathers tighter, pulling the fence toward her body.
The Arrival of Assistance
A man steps into the frame, his boots crunching on the gravel path. He crouches low, bringing his face level with the panicked goose. He reaches out, resting both hands firmly but gently on the bird’s back and sides to prevent her from thrashing and worsening the entanglement. The mother goose stills for a second, her eyes darting toward the man, before she resumes her high-pitched calling.
He studies the way the plastic has wrapped around her wing and body, his fingers feeling for the tension points in the mesh. He begins to adjust the angle of her body, slowly pushing a segment of the fence away from her feathers. His breathing remains slow as he focuses entirely on the intersection of the net and the goose’s plumage.
The Precision of the Release
He pulls a pair of shears from his pocket, the metal blades glinting in the overcast light. He positions the tool against the plastic strands, carefully avoiding the goose’s skin and primary feathers. He snips through one segment of the grid, then another, creating a path for the bird’s trapped wing to slide free.
The goose lets out another sequence of loud calls, her neck arching back while the man works. He makes a final, surgical cut near the base of the mesh. The tension in the fence snaps, and the material falls away from her body. The goose shakes her feathers, stretching her wings out fully as the restriction vanishes.
A Return to the Water
The goslings move closer to the mother, tucking themselves into her side. The man sets aside the severed piece of plastic and grabs a bottle of water, pouring a steady stream into a small tray on the grass. The mother dips her head, drinking deeply while the man watches, his hands resting on his knees. He then offers a shallow pan of grain, watching as the mother and her young ones peck at the food together.
The family lingers for a moment, the mother standing tall and alert. She turns toward the edge of the pond and waddles down the grassy slope, the two goslings following closely behind her. The goose pushes off into the water, and the three of them paddle toward the center of the lake, their silhouettes shrinking against the dark, rippling surface.
