A Sudden Loss of Cargo
The bicycle tires crunch against the loose gravel of the mountain path as the woman pedals forward. Her basket, brimming with golden-brown baguettes, sways slightly with the motion of the bike. Without warning, a golden retriever bounds onto the path, his tail wagging with intense purpose. He lunges toward the bicycle, his front paws skidding on the pavement as he knocks into the front wheel.
The force of the impact causes the bicycle to veer sharply to the left. The basket flips violently, sending a dozen baguettes scattering across the asphalt. The woman’s eyes widen, her mouth forming a perfect circle of disbelief as she loses her balance and topples onto the road. The bike clatters to the ground, its wheels spinning in the thin mountain air.
The Thief in the Grass
Before the woman can scramble to her feet, the retriever has already zeroed in on his prize. He nips one of the warm baguettes from the pavement and trots away toward the lush green hillside. The woman, still on her knees on the road, watches as the dog ignores the other fallen breads and makes a direct beeline into the distance. She pushes herself up, her fingers dusting off the debris, and begins a run through the tall grass in pursuit.
Her breath comes in short, quick gasps as she navigates the incline. The retriever keeps his head held high, the baguette firmly gripped between his teeth. He weaves around patches of wildflowers and stones, his golden coat shimmering in the midday sun. He is fast, his muscles working efficiently as he puts distance between himself and the scene of the tumble. The woman follows his lead, her eyes locked on the tail swaying in front of her.
A Discovery in the Shed
They reach a weathered wooden shed tucked against the slope. The retriever ducked inside, disappearing into the dark interior of the structure. The woman slows her pace, her heavy footsteps muffling against the earth. She reaches the entrance of the shed and leans forward, peering through the dim doorway.
Inside, the retriever drops the baguette onto the wooden floor. A small puppy, barely able to wobble on its legs, waddles over to the bread. It begins to gnaw on the crust, its tiny paws pressing against the loaf. The woman exhales, her shoulders dropping away from her ears. She kneels down in the doorway, her hand reaching out to stroke the golden retriever’s head. The dog leans into her touch, his tongue flicking out to groom the puppy as they share the meal together.
A New Way to Travel
The final rays of the sun cast long, amber shadows across the mountain trail. A bicycle rolls slowly along the path, but the basket is no longer filled with baguettes. Instead, the small puppy sits perched inside, peering over the edge of the woven rim.
The mother dog trots happily alongside the bicycle, occasionally looking up toward the basket. The woman pedals at a leisurely pace, her face softened by a wide, steady smile. She keeps her gaze forward as the golden dog trots beside the moving wheels, the entire group winding their way deeper into the mountain range as the light begins to fade from the peaks.
