A sudden spill on the cobblestone street
The wooden cart hit a bump in the uneven cobblestones, jolting upward before tipping completely onto its side. Hundreds of bright orange fruits spilled out, rolling across the narrow street and coming to a rest against the grey stone walls of the historic buildings.
The man driving the cart tumbled out onto the ground with it. He landed on the hard surface, legs splayed among the scattered oranges.
His companion, a golden Labrador sitting in the cart, climbed out amidst the chaos. The man sat slumped, head buried in his hands, his shoulders hunching forward as he stared down at the mess.
Passersby join the effort
A woman walking past stopped, her eyes tracking the rolling oranges. She knelt down, reaching out to gather a handful of the fruit into her arms.
Another man arrived carrying a large clear plastic bag. He held the mouth of the bag open while the older man, still sitting on the ground, dropped fruit into it. They worked in a rhythm, the plastic rustling as more oranges were added.
Other people began appearing from the shops lining the street. They leaned down, scooping up handfuls of the fruit, moving purposefully around the scattered remains of the load.
The arrival of the canine team
The golden Labrador, standing near the man, lifted its head and let out a sharp, rhythmic bark. Its tail wagged, and it bounded into the middle of the street, head held high.
From the ends of the road, more dogs began to appear. A black Labrador, a German Shepherd, and several smaller breeds trotted into view, gathering around the cart.
The dogs moved with purpose, weaving between the people and the piles of fruit. One by one, they began picking up the plastic bags filled with oranges, holding the handles gently in their teeth.
The man stood up, brushing off his trousers. He watched as the dogs trotted alongside the people, each animal carrying a bag of fruit. They moved in a line, heads held up, their gait steady and calm as they traveled down the center of the road.
The group eventually returned to the cart. The dogs stood on their hind legs, paws resting on the wooden edge of the cart, waiting for the bags to be emptied. The man reached out, taking the bags from their mouths and tipping the remaining fruit back into the wooden bed. The dogs stood in a semicircle around him, tails sweeping the cobblestones as he gestured toward the restored pile.
