From Hero To Entitled: Why She Quit Giving Him Money

A woman was just walking down the sidewalk when out of nowhere, a guy in a dark hoodie lunged at her. He grabbed her arm so hard you could see the fear in her eyes immediately. He was trying to rip her leather wallet right out of her hands.

She was struggling, but he was too strong. Then, this older man with a wild, gray beard and a raggedy coat jumped in. He didn’t even think twice. He shoved the mugger off her and sent him running for his life.

The moment everything changed — She was so shaken up, but she knew she had to thank the man who saved her. He was sitting there on a simple wooden crate, looking like he hadn’t had a hot meal in weeks. She opened her wallet and handed him some cash, a huge smile on her face.

But that wasn’t the end of it. She started coming back every single day. We see the calendar flipping from May to the middle of winter. Rain or shine, snow or sleet, she was there.

She would walk up to him with a shopping bag in one hand and her wallet in the other. She would pull out a twenty, sometimes a fifty, and drop it right into his hand. She felt like she owed him for what he did that day.

He couldn’t believe his eyes when — One afternoon, the snow was piled up on the curbs and the air was freezing. She reached into her wallet and pulled out a fifty-dollar bill. She handed it to him, thinking it would help him get through the cold night.

But the man’s face didn’t light up. Instead, he looked at the bill like it was an insult. He stood up from his crate, his eyes wide and full of rage. He started screaming at the top of his lungs, “Is this a joke?”

He actually had the nerve to get in her face and grab her coat. He was yelling about how it had been three years and he deserved more. He wasn’t the hero anymore; he was a different person entirely.

She realized the hard truth — The woman stood there, frozen. She looked at this man she had supported for years and realized that her kindness had turned into his expectation. He didn’t see a gift anymore; he saw a paycheck.

The gratitude she once felt was completely gone, replaced by a cold realization. You can’t keep pouring into someone who only sees you as a target for their greed. She looked him right in the eye, and for the first time in years, she didn’t feel sorry for him.

She didn’t argue or scream back. She just turned around and walked to her car. As she sat behind the wheel and rolled up the window, she watched him through the glass. She realized that some bonds are better off broken when the respect is gone.
