A Cold Morning In The Deep Woods
The man’s knees buckled, sending his body weight forward onto the damp, leaf-covered trail. His head came to rest against a mossy root while his arms sprawled out across the dirt. Beside him, a small golden retriever puppy pushed its nose against the man’s cheek, nudging the still skin.
The dog circled the man’s torso, its paws treading over the dark fabric of his outdoor jacket. The puppy stopped its circling and placed its front paws on the man’s chest. It licked the man’s chin and then sat back, its tail motionless against the wet ground.
Fog drifted between the trunks of the towering pines, blurring the edges of the path that stretched into the distance. The man did not move, and his eyes remained closed against the gray light of the morning. The puppy let out a soft whine, its head tilting as it watched the man’s chest for any sign of movement.
The Run For Help
The puppy turned away from the man and began a steady trot down the dirt trail. Its small legs moved quickly, kicking up bits of wet earth and orange leaves as it gathered speed. It moved past the dense thicket of trees where the man lay, heading toward the sound of a distant road.
The trail narrowed, but the dog kept its head down, following the winding path through the mist. Soon, the dirt gave way to the hard, black surface of a two-lane highway. Rain had recently fallen, leaving the asphalt shimmering with a thin layer of water.
The puppy did not stop at the edge of the woods. It stepped onto the road, its claws clicking against the wet pavement as it navigated the yellow lines. The dog ran past a sign indicating a nearby town, its breathing becoming audible in the quiet air.
To its left, the forest continued, but to its right, the first buildings of a village began to appear. The puppy stayed on the shoulder of the road, moving with a singular focus toward a white building with a cross on the sign. Its tail remained low, swaying slightly with the effort of the sprint.
Finding The White Coat
At the glass doors of the medical clinic, the puppy rose onto its hind legs. It pressed its front paws against the cool surface of the glass, looking through at the brightly lit hallway inside. It let out a sharp, high-pitched yelp, its tail wagging in short, tight arcs against the wet siding of the building.
Inside, a man in a long white coat stopped in his tracks and looked toward the entrance. The doctor pulled the door open, looking down at the small, wet dog at his feet. The puppy did not enter the building but instead spun around and began to run back toward the road.
The dog stopped after a few yards, looking back over its shoulder until the doctor stepped out onto the sidewalk. The puppy barked once more and began to lead the way back toward the trailhead. The doctor followed, his pace quickening as the dog led him away from the town and back into the fog-filled woods.
They moved past the highway and back onto the soft dirt of the forest floor. The puppy’s ears flopped with every stride, and it occasionally looked back to ensure the man in the white coat was still behind him. The mist grew thicker as they climbed higher into the pines.
A Path To Recovery
They reached the clearing where the man still lay motionless on the ground. The doctor knelt immediately, placing his fingers against the man’s neck to check for a pulse. He opened a small medical bag and began to work, his movements precise and efficient. The puppy sat just inches away, its eyes fixed on its owner’s face as the doctor adjusted the man’s head.
Minutes later, the sound of sirens cut through the silence of the trees. A yellow and white ambulance wound its way up the mountain road, its blue lights flashing against the dark green needles of the pines. Paramedics moved quickly with a stretcher, lifting the man from the forest floor and securing him for the journey down the mountain.
In the quiet of a hospital room later that afternoon, the man sat propped up against white pillows. A thin bandage was wrapped around his forehead, and a slight smile touched his lips as he looked down at his companion. The puppy sat directly on the hospital bed, tucked into the crook of the man’s arm.
The doctor stood by the bedside, resting a hand on the puppy’s head as the man reached out to scratch the dog behind its ears.
