A Sudden Stop Near The Water
The man’s grey sneakers crunched against the dry grass as he stepped away from his parked blue car. He moved with a slow, deliberate gait toward the edge of the pond, his eyes fixed on a splash of white against the dull brown reeds. As he got closer, the source of the distress became clear. A large white goose was pinned to the muddy bank, its legs and body ensnared in a thick mess of green fishing mesh.
The netting was pulled tight, anchoring the bird to the vegetation and the shallow water. Every time the goose tried to shift its weight, the plastic fibers dug deeper into its feathers and legs. The man stopped a few feet away, observing how the mesh had created a complex web of knots around the bird’s orange feet. He stood still for a moment, allowing the goose to see him before he made his next move.
The goose craned its neck, pointing its bright orange beak toward the man. It let out a series of loud, rhythmic honks that echoed across the flat water of the pond. The man didn’t flinch or back away. He kept his hands visible and lowered his voice, speaking in low, steady tones that seemed to settle the air between them.
Establishing A Quiet Connection
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small folding knife, the metal blade catching the flat light of the overcast sky. He slowly lowered himself into a crouch, his knees hovering just above the damp mud. With one hand, he reached out and placed his palm firmly but gently on the goose’s back. The bird’s feathers were damp and slightly matted from its struggle against the net.
The goose didn’t flap its wings or try to bite. Instead, it stayed remarkably still as the man brought the knife closer. He slid the sharp edge of the blade under the first strand of green plastic. There was a faint snap as the tension in that section gave way. He moved his fingers through the mesh, feeling for the places where the line had wrapped most tightly around the bird’s skin.
He worked with the precision of a craftsman, cutting one loop at a time. He had to be careful not to nick the bird’s legs or the sensitive webbing of its feet. The goose watched his hands, its dark eyes following every movement of the blade. The man continued to speak, his voice a constant, low hum that provided a backdrop to the repetitive sound of the knife slicing through the synthetic cord.
Precision In The Mud
As the pile of green netting began to fall away into the mud, the goose started to shift its weight. The man kept his hand on the bird’s chest, ensuring it didn’t try to bolt before the job was finished. He found a particularly stubborn knot tied around the bird’s left leg. He tilted his head, squinting to see the individual threads through the bits of reed and mud that had become caught in the trap.
He slid the tip of the knife into the center of the knot and pulled upward. The green fibers frayed and eventually parted. He reached down and manually pulled the remaining strands away from the goose’s orange webbing. He checked both legs one final time, running his fingers along the feathers to make sure no hidden lines remained. The bird gave a small shake of its head, its honks becoming less frequent and more subdued.
The man gathered the discarded netting into a heap, ensuring it wouldn’t end up back in the water to trap another creature. He stood up slowly, giving his legs a moment to adjust after the long period of crouching. He took two steps back, opening up a path for the bird to reach the water’s edge. He gestured with his hands, encouraging the goose to test its freedom.
The Return To The Open Water
The goose took a tentative step forward, its orange feet sinking slightly into the soft mud. It seemed to realize the weight that had been pulling at its limbs was gone. It paused on the bank, stretching its long neck toward the sky. Then, it extended its large white wings to their full span. The bird gave a vigorous flap, sending a spray of water and loose feathers into the air.
The man stood with his hands on his hips, watching the bird’s progress. The goose didn’t look back; it focused entirely on the ripples of the pond ahead. It waddled through the tall grass and into the shallows, its movements becoming fluid as soon as it hit the water. The bird’s chest pushed against the surface as it began to glide away from the shore.
The man walked back toward his car, the blue door still standing open on the side of the quiet road. He turned his head one last time to see the white shape of the goose moving toward the center of the pond. The bird reached a patch of open water and settled into a steady swim, its white feathers a bright contrast against the dark, glassy surface of the lake.
