A Suspicious Act On The Coastal Road
The man in the yellow t-shirt heaved the heavy burlap sack over the stone wall, his muscles straining against the weight of whatever was trapped inside. He didn’t look back as the bundle hit the churning blue water of the Atlantic with a heavy, muffled splash.
He turned toward his red Porsche, his boots crunching on the gravel of the narrow shoulder, and climbed into the driver’s seat. A Golden Retriever stood nearby, watching the car speed away, its tail low as the exhaust fumes faded into the salty air of the cliffside.
Miles away, in the heart of a bustling city square, an elderly street vendor was busy at his rotisserie. He adjusted the skewers of golden-brown chickens, the smell of roasting meat and herbs drawing a crowd of hungry tourists and locals alike.
The Calculated Theft That Sparked A Chase
The same Golden Retriever appeared from the crowd, its eyes fixed on the bottom row of the fire-roasted poultry. Without a sound, the dog lunged forward, planting its front paws on the metal tray and snagging a whole chicken by the leg.
The vendor shouted, his face turning a deep shade of red as he grabbed a wooden spatula and pointed it at the fleeing animal. He threw off his stained apron and took off running, his heavy boots clattering against the ancient cobblestones as he pursued the canine thief.
The chase led them out of the city center and toward the winding coastal highway, the dog keeping just enough distance to remain in sight. Whenever the vendor slowed down, his chest heaving with the effort of the run, the dog would pause and look back, the roasted chicken still firmly gripped in its jaws.
They reached the exact spot where the red car had been parked earlier, and the dog didn’t stop. It dropped the chicken on the asphalt and leaped over the stone barrier, disappearing into the void above the crashing waves.
A Life Hanging By A Thread Beneath The Waves
The vendor skidded to a halt at the edge, his hands gripping the rough stone as he looked down at the swirling white foam. He saw the dog paddling toward a dark, bobbing shape in the water—the burlap sack was slowly sinking beneath the surface.
The old man kicked off his shoes and took a long stride into the air, his body cutting through the wind before hitting the cold water with a massive impact. He fought the current, his eyes stinging from the salt as he dove deep, reaching for the rough texture of the fabric.
Under the water, the vendor grabbed the top of the sack, feeling something move inside. He kicked his legs with everything he had left, the dog swimming alongside him and grabbing a corner of the burlap in its teeth to help pull the weight toward the shore.
They reached the sandy strip of beach beneath the cliffs, and the vendor collapsed onto his knees, his fingers fumbling with the thick, wet knots of the rope. He pulled a small pocket knife from his trousers and sliced through the cord, peeling back the layers of heavy fabric.
A woman with wet hair plastered to her face gasped for air as she rolled out of the sack, her wrists bound tightly with thick hemp. She coughed up seawater, her chest heaving as she looked at the vendor and the dog with wide, trembling eyes.
An Unexpected Reward For An Unlikely Hero
The vendor reached out and untied her wrists, his hands shaking as he pulled the rough fibers away from her reddened skin. They sat on the sand together for a long time, the dog sitting between them, its wet fur matted with sand and salt.
Weeks later, the vendor was back at his stand in the city, the familiar scent of roasting chicken filling the air once more. A woman in a white dress approached the stand, leading the Golden Retriever on a leather leash.
She stopped in front of the counter and set a heavy black briefcase on the metal surface, clicking the latches open to reveal stacks of hundred-dollar bills. The vendor looked up from his work, his jaw dropping as he recognized the woman he had pulled from the ocean.
The vendor reached down and scratched the dog behind the ears, his fingers disappearring into the soft, golden fur. The dog leaned its head into his palm and closed its eyes while the vendor rested his other hand on the edge of the open briefcase.
