A Fleeting Moment At The Market
A man pulls a crisp bill from his pocket and presses it into the hand of the man sitting on a folding chair. The transaction is silent and quick. The seller stands up, the metal latches on the cage clicking as he swings the door open wide.
Inside the wire structure, a white dog with matted fur and weary eyes shifts its weight. It doesn’t lunge for the opening. It simply watches the man reaching down toward the floor of the crate. The man who just paid the money hooks a leash onto the dog’s collar, his movements practiced and measured.
The dog steps out of the narrow confines of the cage, its claws tapping against the grey pavement of the parking lot. The man walks away, leading the dog out of the crowded market area. The metal cage sits empty, the cardboard sign reading “FOR SALE” still taped to the front, now completely irrelevant.
From The Pavement To The Basin
The scene shifts to the sterile, bright interior of a grooming shop. The dog stands inside a large stainless steel basin. A woman in a blue apron holds a sprayer, directing a steady stream of water across the dog’s back. The water turns grey as it runs off the dog’s coat and down into the drain.
The man from the market stands nearby, his arms crossed over his plaid shirt, watching the water clear. He doesn’t move. He keeps his gaze fixed on the dog, occasionally shifting his weight from one work boot to the other. The dog leans slightly into the side of the tub as the woman works a soapy lather through the thick fur.
The dog’s posture changes. The rigid, heavy-eyed look it wore at the market fades as the warm water continues to wash away the grit of the parking lot. It remains still, enduring the scrubbing with a quiet patience, its head held low as the suds drip from its ears.
A New Reality
The setting changes to the dim, comfortable quiet of a living room. The dog, now clean and fluffy, stands on a carpeted rug in the center of the room. A metal bowl sits on the floor filled with food.
The man is on his knees on the rug, his hand resting firmly on the dog’s shoulder. As the dog eats, the man pets the long white fur along its back. His hand moves in slow, steady rhythms. The dog continues to eat, its tail giving a small, subtle wag against the carpet.
The final transition brings us into a bedroom illuminated only by the warm glow of a lamp on the nightstand. The man is fast asleep under the covers, his head resting against the pillow. Curled into a tight ball against his side, the white dog rests its head on the man’s leg.
The dog’s eyes are closed, its breathing rhythmic and heavy, perfectly synchronized with the man’s deep, steady slumber. The man’s hand rests loosely on the dog’s back, his fingers curled into the thick, clean white fur as both man and dog remain motionless in the dark room.
