The Unsteady Ride Down the Street
A community patrol officer stepped out of his black-and-white cruiser and pointed directly at the rusty basket of a moving bicycle.
The elderly rider squeezed his hand brakes, bringing the squeaking, weathered vehicle to a halt in the middle of the residential asphalt.
Inside the wire basket sat a fluffy golden retriever puppy, its head tilting as it looked up at the dark blue uniform.
The officer greeted the man, his eyes dropping to the worn-out tires, chipped brown paint, and the bent metal of the frame.
With a gentle nod, the rider reached into the basket, sliding his hands under the puppy’s chest to lift the animal safely into his arms.
He held the young dog close to his chest, the puppy’s paws resting against his worn grey t-shirt.
The officer took hold of the handlebars, testing the weight of the old bicycle.
He hopped onto the seat and began pedaling down the road, his knees nearly hitting the handlebars as he rode away with a smile.
An Unexpected Disposal
The officer turned a corner, steering the squeaking bike down a narrow alleyway lined with wooden fences and brick garages.
He stopped next to a large yellow dumpster overflowing with bulging black trash bags.
Dismounting the vehicle, the officer gripped the frame of the rusty bicycle with both hands.
He lifted the entire bike off the ground, raising it above his shoulders before tossing it into the yellow bin with a loud metallic crash.
Back on the main street, the elderly man sat down on the rough concrete curb, pulling his knees toward his chest.
He cradled the puppy in his lap, stroking its soft ears while staring down at the empty road where his only transport had been.
The puppy licked the man’s wrinkled hand, its tail giving a slow wag against the dirty curb.
A Rumble on the Asphalt
A low, mechanical hum began to vibrate through the neighborhood air, drawing the man’s attention.
The man raised his head as a bright orange vintage motorcycle rounded the corner, complete with a matching sidecar and a massive red bow taped to the front.
The officer sat behind the handlebars, navigating the heavy machine smoothly to the edge of the curb where the man sat waiting.
He switched off the ignition, the engine sputtering to a quiet stop right in front of the pair.
The officer climbed off the leather seat, took a step forward, and extended his hand toward the older man.
Dangling from his fingers was a small metal ring holding a single ignition key.
A New Way Forward
The elderly man stood up, his jaw dropping slightly as his eyes darted from the keys to the brand-new vehicle.
He reached out, his fingers wrapping around the metal key as the officer dropped it into his palm.
The man stepped forward, wrapping his free arm tightly around the officer’s shoulders in a deep embrace.
The officer returned the hug, patting the man’s shoulder while the golden retriever puppy remained nestled safely between them.
They pulled apart, both men smiling widely as the elderly man turned to look at the leather-lined sidecar waiting for his dog.
