An Unexpected Obstacle On The Bike Path
The bicycle’s front tire slowed to a stop just inches away from a small brown shape lying on the hot asphalt.
A tiny striped chipmunk lay flat on its back, its white belly exposed to the sun and its limbs completely limp.
Its chest rose and fell in shallow, rapid breaths that indicated extreme heat exhaustion.
Directly over the fallen animal, a second chipmunk scrambled in circles, refusing to leave its partner behind.
The active chipmunk nudged the other’s neck, using its tiny paws to scratch at its belly in an effort to wake it.
It pushed its nose against the limp chipmunk’s cheek, running back and forth while looking up at the approaching bicycle.
The cyclist straddled his bike frame, watching the tiny animal’s frantic attempts to revive its companion on the blistering pavement.
A Gentle Hand and Cool Water
The rider carefully stepped off his pedals, keeping his movements slow and deliberate to avoid scaring the remaining animal.
He unzipped his black-and-blue backpack, reaching past his gear to retrieve a partially filled bottle of water.
The active chipmunk took a few steps back but did not run into the nearby woods, keeping its dark eyes locked on its friend.
Leaning down, the cyclist extended his hand and gently wrapped his fingers around the unresponsive chipmunk.
The tiny creature did not struggle; its body remained loose and heavy in his palm as he lifted it off the hot ground.
With his other hand, he uncapped the water bottle and began pouring a very thin, controlled stream of water.
He aimed the water so it dripped over the chipmunk’s nose and mouth, wetting its dry whiskers and fur.
For several long seconds, the animal lay motionless, its eyes shut tight as the water pooled around its snout.
Suddenly, the chipmunk’s whiskers twitched, and its tiny pink tongue emerged to lap at the wet droplets.
It raised its front paws, gripping the cyclist’s thumb for support as it began to drink eagerly from the stream.
The animal’s breathing slowed to a more natural rhythm, and its eyes flickered open, bright and clear.
The second chipmunk watched the entire process from just inches away, standing on its hind legs near the bicycle’s front tire.
The Restorative Power of a Simple Snack
Once the revived chipmunk showed signs of strength, the cyclist lowered his hands back to the level of the pavement.
He opened his fingers, letting the small animal step out onto its own four feet on the cooler asphalt.
The moment its paws touched the ground, the second chipmunk darted forward, pressing its nose directly against its partner’s face.
The two animals stood close together, their tails flicking in unison as they checked on each other.
To help them recover their energy, the man reached back into his open bag and pulled out a pouch of salted trail mix.
He tipped the bag, letting a small pile of almonds, peanuts, and cashews spill onto the ground near their feet.
The chipmunks immediately gathered around the pile, picking up the large nuts and stuffing them into their cheek pouches.
Their small jaws worked rapidly as they chewed, gaining much-needed nutrients after their ordeal in the sun.
With their cheek pouches bulging, the two chipmunks turned in unison and ran toward the edge of the path.
They scurried through the green grass, slipping under the lowest rail of a split-rail wooden fence.
The camera captured their final movement as they disappeared together into a dark, hollowed-out log nestled in the shade of the forest.
