Former General Reminds A Car Salesman That Character Defines Value

A Cold Reception

A woman with silver hair pulled back in a tidy bun walks across the polished floor of a luxury car dealership. She stops beside a silver sedan. Her hands rest lightly on the hood of the vehicle.

A salesman in a sharp, dark suit walks toward her. He holds a hand up, palm out, signaling for her to stop. He gestures vaguely toward the front door.

He speaks, telling her that the cars in his showroom are far beyond her reach. He points across the street, suggesting she look for something more modest elsewhere.

The salesman crosses his arms over his chest. He tips his chin up slightly. His gaze sweeps over her plain white shirt and grey trousers, stopping briefly on her skin.

He tells her that his time is for real buyers only. He warns her not to touch any of the vehicles on the floor because she cannot afford them.

The woman looks at the man for a long moment. She opens a thin black folder in her hands and pulls out a document. She places the paper on the hood of the car.

She tells the salesman that she will take the car. She says she intends to pay in full, right now.

The Unexpected Shift

An older man in a navy blue suit walks onto the showroom floor. He approaches the woman and the salesman. He stops and pulls his shoulders back, standing at attention.

He reaches out a hand, though he does not touch her. He addresses her as General. He says it is an honor to see her again.

The salesman’s jaw drops. His eyes widen as he shifts his weight from one foot to the other. His arms, previously crossed tightly, drop to his sides.

The woman stares at the salesman. She holds out her arm. A tattoo of an eagle, a globe, and an anchor is visible on her skin, paired with the word Veteran.

She tells the salesman that she once led ten thousand soldiers. She explains that she never measured the worth of her people by the fabric of their uniforms.

She tells him that she always judged them by their character. The salesman pulls his hands behind his back. He lowers his head, his gaze directed at his own shoes.

A Lesson In Humility

The salesman takes a half-step back, his shoulders slumping. He speaks quietly, looking up at the woman. He tells her he is sorry for his behavior.

He says he made a mistake in judging her. He asks for her forgiveness. He remains still, his body language muted and small compared to his earlier posture.

The woman smiles. She reaches into her pocket and pulls out a set of car keys. She holds them out toward the salesman.

She tells him that everyone deserves a second chance. She moves the keys closer to his hand. She says that he can be the one to hand her the keys to her new car.

The salesman reaches out and takes the keys from her. His fingers brush hers briefly. He looks down at the keychain, then back up at the woman.

She nods at him, then turns to look toward the showroom floor. The salesman looks at the keys in his palm as the light reflects off the showroom windows behind them.
