A Walk Down the Center Aisle
A golden retriever walked slowly down the stone center aisle of the church toward six military pallbearers holding a flag-draped casket.
The dog did not look to the left or the right as its paws clicked softly against the polished slate floor of the sanctuary.
In the pews, men and women in dark clothing turned their heads to watch the animal’s progress, many of them pressing white tissues to their eyes or holding their hands over their mouths as they wept.
The six soldiers stood at rigid attention, their white-gloved hands gripping the edges of the casket as the dog approached the steps of the altar where the memorial service was taking place.
Standing at the head of the coffin, a high-ranking military commander kept his shoulders square and his eyes fixed straight ahead, tracking the golden retriever’s movement only with a slight, deliberate tilt of his chin.
The dog reached the base of the wooden platform, paused for a single second to look up at the flag, and then leaped gracefully onto the top of the casket.
A Place of Honor
The golden retriever sat directly on the red, white, and blue stripes of the American flag, its tail resting quietly behind it on the polished wood of the casket’s edge.
A woman wearing a black long-sleeved dress stepped out from the front pew and walked slowly up the stairs toward the side of the coffin.
She stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the military officer, her gaze dropping to the dog sitting alertly on the wooden box, its ears perked forward as it looked at her face.
The commander reached into his formal uniform jacket and pulled out a small, glossy color photograph, holding it up between himself and the crying woman.
In the photo, a smiling soldier in desert camouflage sat on the ground with his arm draped over the neck of the exact same golden retriever, a military humvee parked behind them in the sand.
The woman’s chest rose and fell in a sharp, sudden breath, and she quickly pressed her hand against her lips as tears ran down her cheeks in the quiet of the chapel.
The officer held the photograph steady, his jaw muscles tightening and his eyes shining under the brim of his military cap as he let her gaze at the image of her loved one.
After a few moments, she lowered her hand, took a slow step backward, and walked back down the aisle toward her seat, her shoulders trembling slightly as she moved.
The Final March
With the woman back in her seat, the golden retriever shifted its weight on top of the casket as the service drew to a close.
Instead of jumping down to the floor, the dog lowered its chest onto the fabric of the flag, stretching its front legs out and resting its chin flat against its front paws.
The six pallbearers adjusted their stance, bending their knees in unison as they prepared to lift the heavy load with the dog still resting on top.
They raised the casket slowly to chest height, keeping it perfectly level so the dog lying on top remained completely undisturbed and balanced on the stars.
The soldiers turned toward the rear of the church and began taking slow, measured steps down the center aisle, their boots matching a quiet, solemn rhythm.
The golden retriever did not move, keeping its chin pressed firmly to the blue field of stars as it rode the casket toward the exit of the sanctuary.
Mourners on both sides of the aisle watched the procession pass, their faces wet with tears as the dog kept its eyes trained on the open double doors at the back of the chapel.
