A Sudden Alert On The Tarmac
The golden retriever barked twice at the nose gear of the massive passenger aircraft.
Wearing a black vest marked with the words POLICE K-9, the dog turned away from the wheels and locked its eyes on the metal stairs leading up to the cabin doors.
A pilot in a white shirt and black tie stepped down the metal steps, waving his hand toward the terminal.
The dog did not stop, running past the pilot and scaling the narrow stairs two at a time.
The animal pushed through the open cabin door and entered the narrow carpeted aisle of the plane.
Passengers sat on both sides of the rows, their heads turning as the dog began to move slowly down the aisle.
The Search Inside the Cabin
The golden retriever lowered its nose to the floor, sniffing the edges of the blue seats and the shoes of the passengers.
It paused briefly at a woman’s white sneakers, inhaling deeply before moving to the next row.
A man in a green shirt pulled his knees back to give the working dog more room on the floor.
The dog kept its head low, its tail swaying gently as it evaluated every bag stored under the seats.
Rows of seated passengers watched the dog’s tail sway slightly as it worked its way deeper into the plane.
The dog stopped abruptly in front of a woman wearing sunglasses and a black leather jacket.
She pulled a brown leather travel bag close to her lap, wrapping her fingers tightly around the handles.
The dog bared its teeth slightly and clamped its jaws onto the corner of the brown leather bag.
The woman pulled backward, her shoulders tensing as she struggled to keep her grip on the luggage.
She shook her head and cried out as the dog pulled harder, dragging the heavy bag toward the floor.
The dog planted its paws firmly on the aisle carpet, tugging the heavy bag away from her chest.
Two flight crew members stepped forward from the back of the cabin, their hands reaching out to grab the woman’s arms.
A Fast Run For Safety
With a final pull, the dog ripped the leather strap out of the woman’s hands and spun around.
Holding the heavy bag firmly in its teeth, the golden retriever sprinted back down the aisle, leaping over outstretched feet.
The pilot watched from the cabin door as the dog ran back down the steep metal stairs onto the concrete tarmac.
The dog’s paws clicked rapidly against the pavement as it ran past the giant jet engines toward the perimeter of the airfield.
The bag swayed back and forth in the dog’s mouth, but its grip did not loosen as it sped up.
It reached a high chain-link fence, gathered its weight onto its hind legs, and leaped completely over the metal barrier without dropping the bag.
The dog landed on the dirt on the other side and kept running, its tail trailing behind it as it entered a thick forest path.
Pine needles and dry leaves kicked up behind its hind paws as it navigated the narrow gaps between the tall trees.
The trees gave way to a rocky, winding trail that sloped sharply upward along the edge of a high coastal cliff.
The Edge of the Cliff
The dog reached the highest point of the dirt path, where the ground dropped straight down into the ocean below.
Gravel slid loose beneath its paws and tumbled down the steep rock face toward the white, churning water.
Stopping just inches from the edge, the dog whipped its neck to the side and released its grip on the brown leather bag.
The bag sailed over the cliff face, tumbling through the air toward the water below.
A massive ball of yellow and orange fire erupted from the bag mid-air, sending a wave of black smoke billowing up toward the sky.
The golden retriever stood still on the dirt ledge, its chest rising and falling as it looked down at the foaming white waves below.
