The Confrontation
A man in a gold-patterned button-down shirt points a finger at the mechanic standing before him in the garage. His face is flushed with a deep, unnatural red hue as he waves a stack of papers. He begins shouting, demanding the mechanic fix his car immediately while warning him not to overcharge. The mechanic, wearing a dark blue work uniform with the name Lomax stitched above his pocket, stands still. He listens with his hands clasped, the gray fabric of his work shirt creased from a day of labor.
The man in the patterned shirt shakes his head and gestures toward the rest of the shop. He tells the mechanic to find someone else to handle the work because he only deals with whoever is currently in charge. The mechanic does not move. He locks eyes with the man, his expression neutral. He points toward the young man standing a few feet away, who is listening to the exchange with his hands at his sides.
The Shift in Power
The young man in gray coveralls steps forward. He addresses the man in the patterned shirt as his boss. He explains that this is the only shop in the state certified to handle the rare engine housed inside the vehicle. The young man points toward the luxury car suspended in the air behind them, its frame lifted toward the ceiling of the garage. He asks where the owner would like the car to be positioned for the work to begin.
The man in the patterned shirt looks at the car, then back at the older mechanic. The mechanic remains standing with his arms crossed tightly against his chest. He holds a clipboard in one hand, the paper filled with notes on the vehicle. He tells the man that he built this shop from nothing over the course of thirty years. He speaks calmly, noting that he is the only person in the state capable of fixing the engine in the car currently suspended above them.
The Lesson
The man in the patterned shirt turns his gaze downward. He lets out a breath, his shoulders dropping. The earlier shouting vanishes as he looks at the floor, then up at the mechanic. He admits that he was out of line for his earlier behavior and asks for the mechanic to still help him. He stands there, shifting his weight between his feet, waiting for a response.
The older mechanic looks down at his clipboard, his pen poised over the paper. He tells the man that he treats every customer with fairness, regardless of their behavior. The mechanic continues to hold the clipboard, his thumbs resting on the top edge of the paper. The camera focuses on the mechanic’s steady gaze as he makes his point. He finishes his sentence and turns his attention back to the work logs on his clipboard.
