A Strange Bundle on the Asphalt
The white woven sack rolled twice on the rough edge of the roadway as a black sedan sped past, kicking up a gust of wind that ruffled the grass.
Inside the tightly tied fabric, a small tabby kitten poked its head through a frayed opening, its small paws clawing at the thick strands.
Every passing vehicle shook the ground beneath the small bundle, sending vibrations through the kitten’s fragile frame.
The animal struggled to pull its body forward, but the heavy material pinned its hind legs to the gravel.
Another car zoomed by, the tires humming loudly against the blacktop just inches from the kitten’s ears.
The kitten pressed its chin against the asphalt, its chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow breaths.
Its eyes darted from the oncoming traffic to the tall green stalks of grass lining the ditch.
A Vehicle Pulls Over
A dark SUV slowed down, its brake lights glowing red against the overcast sky as it pulled onto the narrow shoulder.
The driver’s side door swung open, and a man in jeans and a gray t-shirt stepped down onto the pavement.
He walked with deliberate, even steps toward the white object, his eyes fixed on the moving fabric.
As he neared, he dropped to both knees on the hard gravel, lowering his center of gravity to avoid scaring the animal.
The kitten pulled back slightly, its ears flattening against its head as the shadow of the man fell over it.
The man reached into his pocket and produced a pair of scissors, holding them low and away from the kitten’s face.
He slipped the metal blade under the tight white strings that bound the opening of the sack.
Cutting the Threads
With a clean snip, the first layer of woven plastic parted, loosening the grip around the kitten’s midsection.
The man worked methodically, cutting along the seam of the bag to widen the exit without letting the sharp edges touch the kitten’s skin.
The kitten remained still, its front paws extended onto the road as the heavy fabric began to fall away from its torso.
He peeled back the stiff white layers, exposing the tabby’s striped back and hind legs to the open air.
The kitten stretched its rear legs, shaking off the numbness from being confined in the tight space.
The man set the scissors aside and reached for a clear plastic bottle of water from his vehicle.
He tilted the bottle, letting a thin, controlled stream of water cascade over the kitten’s dusty back to lower its body temperature.
The water soaked through the brown and black fur, running down the kitten’s sides and pooling on the asphalt.
Nourishment and Safety
Next, the man filled a small rectangular plastic container with clean water and placed it directly in front of the kitten’s nose.
The small feline lowered its head immediately, lapping up the water with rapid tongue movements.
The man watched silently, his hands resting on his thighs as the kitten drank its fill.
Once the kitten stopped drinking, he poured a small handful of dry kibble into his open palm and offered it forward.
The tabby sniffed the food before taking a single piece, chewing slowly while keeping its eyes on the surrounding fields.
The man reached out with one finger and gently stroked the top of the kitten’s head, smoothing down the damp fur between its ears.
The kitten closed its eyes, leaning its weight slightly into the man’s hand as the wind blew through the grass beside them.
