An Urgent S.O.S. on the Grass
The golden retriever stood over the bound white bird, barking loudly toward the empty stretch of road.
On the grassy shoulder next to the asphalt, a large white peacock lay completely immobilized, wrapped tightly in a thick red net.
The netting was bound securely around the bird’s body, pinning its wings flat against its sides.
A small group of fluffy yellow and brown ducklings huddled close to the trapped bird, looking up at the dog’s face.
The dog lowered his head, nudging the red mesh with his wet nose in an attempt to loosen the cords.
The heavy knots did not budge, and the peacock remained pinned to the ground, only its neck free to move.
Realizing he could not break the thick synthetic lines alone, the retriever turned and began running at a full sprint down the empty road.
Rushing for Help
The dog galloped along the edge of the asphalt, his tongue hanging out as he headed toward a nearby homestead.
He turned sharply into the grassy front yard of a small house where an elderly man was working.
The man was holding a long-handled wooden rake, clearing debris from a garden patch.
The retriever ran straight to him, barking sharply and jumping up on his hind legs to touch the man’s coat.
The man paused his work, leaning his weight on the rake handle as he looked down at his agitated pet.
The dog spun in a tight circle, ran a few paces back toward the driveway, and barked loudly again.
The man lowered the rake to the grass and stepped away from his garden plot.
He began a jogging pace, following the retriever as the dog led him down the path toward the main road.
The Rescue Effort
They reached the spot on the grassy shoulder where the white peacock lay quiet, guarded by the small ducklings.
The man knelt down in the dirt, placing his hands on the peacock’s back to keep the bird calm.
The retriever hovered close, pacing back and forth on the grass while keeping his eyes on his owner’s hands.
The man reached into his black coat pocket and pulled out a pair of heavy metal cutting shears.
He slipped the lower blade of the shears beneath the first red strand, being careful not to pinch the bird’s skin.
With a firm squeeze, the metal blades snipped through the thick cord, releasing some of the tension.
He continued cutting the red mesh one section at a time, peeling the severed netting away from the bird’s torso.
The peacock remained remarkably still, its head raised high as the red mesh began to fall away.
A Stunning Display of Freedom
The man pulled the final tangled threads of the red net away from the peacock’s legs and tail.
As the last constraint fell to the grass, the bird shifted its weight and pushed itself up onto its feet.
The small ducklings took several quick steps back into the taller grass as the large bird stood up.
The peacock took a brief step forward, shaking its feathers to rid itself of the remaining red fibers.
Suddenly, the white peacock lifted its long tail feathers, fanning them out into a massive, pristine white circle.
The dog barked once and wagged his tail as the bird stood tall, displaying its plumage on the side of the road.
