Driver Pulls Over to Save Squirrel Hanging by the Roadside

The Trapped Animal

A clear plastic bottle swung back and forth from a low-hanging branch as a small gray squirrel struggled inside a tight pocket of black mesh netting.

Its entire head was wedged deep inside the narrow neck of the discarded container, leaving its body dangling completely suspended just inches from the asphalt edge of a paved two-lane road.

Every few seconds, a car or SUV sped past, sending a sudden gust of wind that caused the dangling rodent to twist and spin helplessly in the air.

The squirrel kicked its hind legs in empty space, searching for any solid ground or branch to grab onto, but its claws only caught the open air.

The heavy plastic bottle acted like a helmet, trapping its head completely and blocking its vision, preventing it from seeing the traffic rushing by just feet away.

A Rescuer Pulls Over

A dark grey sedan slowed down on the narrow asphalt shoulder and came to a stop just a few yards past the hanging branch.

The driver’s side door opened, and a man wearing a plaid shirt and blue jeans stepped out onto the gravel.

He walked directly toward the tree line, his eyes focused entirely on the small, struggling shape hanging from the branch.

He knelt down in the dirt, balancing himself on his knees right next to the patch of weeds and discarded netting on the ground.

In his right hand, he held a pair of large black shears, their sharp metal blades catching the afternoon light filtering through the canopy.

Cutting the Tangled Netting

He reached out with his left hand, gently cupping the squirrel’s lower body to support its weight and prevent it from thrashing.

The squirrel remained remarkably still as the cold metal blades slid beneath the tight plastic fibers wrapping its back.

The man squinted as he lined up the first cut, snipping through a thick band of black netting that bound the animal’s shoulders to the main line.

He moved his fingers slowly, carefully separating the animal’s soft gray fur from the synthetic cords to ensure he did not nick its skin.

The shears clicked rhythmically as he cut away section after section of the binding, working his way up toward the plastic neck of the bottle.

Each cut released a small amount of tension, allowing the squirrel’s body to sag slightly lower into the safety of the man’s hands.

Slicing the Bottle Free

He transitioned his grip to the plastic bottle itself, holding the rigid container steady while guiding the shears around the rim where the netting met the plastic.

With a firm squeeze of the handles, the blades sliced through the thickest part of the cord, releasing the bottle from the overhead branch.

The squirrel immediately slid free from the plastic enclosure, dropping onto the pile of old netting on the forest floor below.

Without looking back, the rodent scrambled out of the remaining mesh, its paws kicking up dry dirt as it darted into the thick green ferns of the woods.

The man remained on his knees in the dirt, watching the small animal disappear into the safety of the deep green brush.

He turned his head back toward the road, looked directly into the camera lens, and raised both of his thumbs high with a bright smile.
