A Discovery In The Grass
The golden retriever puppy pressed his nose against the green netting tangled around the mother duck.
The white bird flapped her wings weakly, trapped tight within the plastic mesh. Nearby, three small yellow ducklings chirped and huddled close to their mother’s side.
The puppy circled the trapped bird, sniffing at the tight knots holding her to the ground. He nudged the netting with his snout, but the plastic did not budge.
Realizing he could not free her himself, the puppy turned and sprinted across the open field. His tail streamed behind him as he headed toward the farm buildings.
Searching For Help
His small paws kicked up bits of dirt and grass as he raced toward the stone cottage on the hill.
He reached the heavy wooden door of the building and stood up on his hind legs. He scratched at the dark wood with his front paws, whining and looking toward the iron latch.
The door swung open, revealing an older man wearing a flat cap and a brown wool vest. The puppy dropped back to all fours, barked once, and took off running back toward the pasture.
The man closed the door behind him and followed the golden puppy down the narrow dirt path. They ran past stone walls and grazing sheep under the bright afternoon sun.
The puppy kept his head turned back, checking to make sure the man was still following him down the hill.
Untangling The Netting
The puppy led the man directly to the patch of tall grass where the duck was trapped.
The man dropped to his knees, his hands reaching out slowly toward the bird. The puppy sat down right beside him, his tail wagging slowly as he watched the man’s fingers work.
With steady hands, the man began pulling the green mesh loops over the duck’s head. He worked the plastic strands down her neck, loosening the tight knots around her wings.
The puppy leaned forward, sniffing the ducklings as they huddled together in the grass nearby. The mother duck remained still, letting the man untangle her wings one by one.
Once the last loop of netting cleared her tail, she stood up and shook her feathers. The three tiny ducklings immediately rushed to her side, chirping loudly as she stepped free from the grass.
A Safe Homecoming
The man stood up, gathering the discarded green netting in his hand to prevent further danger.
He began walking back toward the farmhouse, with the puppy trotting closely at his heels. Directly behind the puppy, the mother duck and her three ducklings walked in a neat single-file line.
They entered the stone house together, leaving the bright green fields behind.
The man sat down on the polished wooden floor of his living room, next to a stone fireplace. He placed a shallow metal dish filled with grain on the floor.
The mother duck and her ducklings crowded around the dish, dipping their bills into the food. The man reached out his hand and gently patted the puppy’s head as they sat side by side on the floor watching the birds eat.
