A Dangerous Float Down the River
The golden retriever puppy balanced its paws on the wet, slippery bark of a floating log.
Cold river water splashed over the wood, soaking the young dog’s light fur as the current swept it downstream.
Ahead, the river grew louder and more turbulent, churning into white rapids.
A yellow warning sign on the bank read “Danger: Waterfall Ahead,” marking the hazard just a short distance away.
The puppy stood near the edge of the log, shifting its weight back and forth to maintain balance on the rolling timber.

The Race Along the Riverbank

He pushed the boat hard into the shallow water, splashing through the mud as he moved.
He climbed inside, grabbed the pull cord of the outboard motor, and yanked it to start the engine.
The motor roared to life, kicking up a heavy spray of water behind the stern as he turned the handle.
He steered the boat directly into the fast-flowing current, navigating around rocks and through swells.
Navigating the Rough Rapids
The man guided the boat through the white water, keeping a steady hand on the tiller.
He watched the puppy’s position as the distance between them began to close.
As the river narrowed and the rapids grew more violent, he cut the engine to avoid damaging the propeller on hidden rocks.
He grabbed a wooden paddle, kneeling in the center of the boat to steer manually through the rocks.
With deep, heavy strokes, he pushed against the strong current to keep the boat aligned with the path of the floating log.
Just ahead, the log collided with a massive dark boulder sitting in the middle of the river.
The impact jarred the log, forcing the wet puppy to scramble off the wood and onto the flat top of the rock.
The puppy stood shivering, watching the boat approach as water rushed around the base of the boulder.
A Safe Return to Dry Land
The puppy stood on the slippery boulder as waves crashed around its feet.
The man paddled closer, bringing the bow of his boat right alongside the wet rock.
He dropped the paddle onto the bottom of the boat, leaning forward over the bow.
He reached out with both hands, gently grasping the puppy around its chest and belly.
He lifted the shivering dog off the boulder and set it safely onto the dry floor of the boat.
The puppy shook its coat, spraying water drops across the inside of the boat.
With the puppy secure, the man paddled the boat toward the calmer waters near the shore.
The boat slid onto the muddy bank, and the man climbed out onto the grass.
He knelt down in the dirt, cupping the puppy’s wet face in his hands and rubbing its ears.
The puppy wagged its tail and leaned its head into the man’s hands as they sat together on the riverbank.
