A Crying Sound by the Roadside
An orange kitten gripped the rough inner rubber of a discarded car tire and cried. Its small paws clung to the tread as it let out a series of high-pitched meows, unable to climb out of the deep rim. The kitten’s wide blue eyes scanned the empty grass while its tail twitched nervously in the afternoon heat.
A scooter engine hummed to a stop at the curb. A young man wearing a red jacket clicked the kickstand down, pulled his black helmet off, and set it on the grass. He stepped over the curb, his eyes locked on the tire on the lawn. He walked slowly, watching the kitten’s head bob up and down.
He dropped to his knees, bringing his face close to the opening of the heavy tire. The kitten paused its crying, blinking up at the tall shadow now blocking the bright sun.
A Gentle Hand Reaches Down
“Whoa, hey little guy,” the man said, lowering his voice. “How did you even get in there?” He slowly extended his hands into the narrow, dark cavity of the wheel where the kitten was wedged.
He slid his fingers under the kitten’s front legs and cradled its small ribcage. The rubber was warm and smelled of old dust. With a gentle pull, he coaxed the kitten out of the tight squeeze, lifting its body into the open air.
The kitten dangled for a second, its back legs kicking slightly as the man brought it closer. He cradled the orange ball of fur in both palms, a wide smile spreading across his face as he examined the tiny animal.
He turned the kitten over gently, checking its small pink paw pads for any cuts. The kitten stopped mewing entirely, sniffing the man’s fingers and settling into the warmth of his hands.
Sharing a Meal with a New Friend
A few moments later, the man sat flat on the concrete curb with his legs crossed. He pulled a sandwich from a brown paper wrapper and took a bite, looking back at his scooter. He chewed slowly, feeling the warm sun on his neck. The kitten watched him intently from inside the open delivery bag on the back rack.
The kitten stood on its hind legs, resting its front paws on the zipper edge of the insulated bag. Its nose twitched rapidly as the scent of the sandwich filled the air.
The man tore off a small piece of bread and reached back toward the scooter. “You’re my co-pilot now, buddy,” he murmured, holding the scrap out.
The kitten stretched its neck forward, clamped its jaw onto the bread, and pulled it back into the bag to chew. The man watched with a nod, taking another bite of his own lunch.
A Safe Ride Home
Once the sandwich was gone, the man stood up and brushed the crumbs off his lap. He picked up the kitten once more, holding it close to his chest as he checked its condition.
He lowered the kitten back into the insulated delivery pouch, making sure it was sitting comfortably on the soft interior. The kitten let out one soft chirp and poked its head over the rim to watch the man.
He patted the kitten’s forehead with one finger, and the kitten blinked slowly, settling its weight into the bottom of the black bag as the man prepared to start his engine.
