The Spilled Drink on the Sidewalk
The young couple walked shoulder-to-shoulder past the hanging flags of a city street, each holding a tall cup of orange juice.
The woman’s fingers loosened, sending her bright orange drink splashing onto the pavement right beside a cardboard sign.
She turned her head and laughed, walking away with a quick stride while the orange liquid pooled near a seated man’s feet.
Her partner stopped, his white sneakers remaining planted on the concrete as he looked down at the mess on the sidewalk.
He looked at his partner’s retreating back, then turned his attention back to the man sitting against the stone wall.
The man in the camouflage jacket sat quietly, his hand resting on his knee near the wet cardboard that read “Anything Helps.”
The young man let go of his own orange drink, letting it drop to the ground as he stepped closer to the seated man.
An Invitation to Sit Down
The younger man bent at the waist, extending his right hand toward the older man sitting on the pavement.
He gripped the man’s forearm, pulling upward gently until both of them stood upright on the busy city street.
The woman in the pink floral dress was already gone, lost in the sea of pedestrians walking past the storefronts.
Instead of following her, the young man walked beside the older man, guiding him away from the spill and toward a nearby cafe with outdoor seating.
Underneath a red canvas awning, he pulled out a woven wicker chair, waiting for the older man to sit before taking the seat opposite him.
Soon, the small round table was covered with plates of hot pasta, seasoned meats, grilled chicken, and bowls of fresh bread.
The young man smiled and gestured toward the plates, encouraging his companion to eat first while the waiters looked on.
They sat at the corner table, talking over the steaming dishes as city traffic hummed around them in the afternoon light.
The older man reached across the table, shaking the young man’s hand before standing up from his chair and stepping onto the street.
A Surprise at the Curb
The older man walked away from the cafe, with the young man following close behind down the cobblestone sidewalk.
They stopped beside a low-slung, matte black sports car parked along the busy avenue under the tall buildings.
The older man reached for the driver-side door, pulling the handle to swing open the scissor door of the luxury vehicle.
He leaned inside the cabin, retrieved a heavy silver aluminum briefcase from the passenger seat, and turned back around.
He pushed the metal case into the young man’s hands, nodding once as he let go of the handle.
The young man held the weight of the case, looking down at the brushed aluminum surface while the older man stood by the open car door.
He slid his thumbs over the metal latches, popping them open and lifting the lid to reveal rows of bundled hundred-dollar bills stacked neatly inside.
