An Unexpected Splash
The golden retriever stood at the bow of the orange rescue inflatable, his front paws gripping the rounded edge. His head tilted sideways as a shadow glided beneath the water’s surface.
A dolphin broke through the calm surface, leaping high into the air and splashing back down with a sharp slap of its tail. The dog barked twice, his tail wagging rapidly as he watched the ripples expand.
Without warning, the canine launched himself over the side of the boat, clearing the handrails entirely. He hit the ocean with a heavy splash, his orange life vest bringing him quickly back to the surface.
A Hidden Cry for Help
Beneath the surface, the dog swam downward with steady, rhythmic strokes of his paws. The dolphin waited just below, its grey body illuminated by beams of sunlight filtering through the water.
A thick, green fishing net was wrapped tightly around the dolphin’s midsection, anchoring it to a sharp shelf of coral. The dolphin writhed slowly, unable to break free from the synthetic mesh.
The dog swam directly to the base of the coral, his eyes wide open under the saltwater. He opened his mouth and clamped his teeth onto the tangled knot of netting snagged on the reef.
He kicked his hind legs hard, shaking his head side to side until the net slipped free from the jagged coral point.
The Struggle for the Surface
With the net detangled from the ocean floor, the dog swam toward the light, dragging the heavy mesh in his mouth. The dolphin swam beside him, matching his slow upward ascent to keep the tension off the line.
They breached the surface together in a burst of foam, right alongside the idling rescue boat. The human rescuers leaned over the pontoon, quickly realizing the danger the dolphin was in.
One of the rescuers slipped over the side of the boat, dropping into the water with a splash. He reached out to stabilize the dolphin by its dorsal fin, pulling a safety knife from his belt.
He worked quickly, sawing through the wet, thick cords of the netting until the final strand split apart.
The Ultimate Reward
The freed dolphin slipped easily out of the remaining net, diving deep before leaping into the air in celebration. The dog swam back to the boat, his nose bobbing just above the water as he waited.
The rescuers grabbed the handles of the dog’s life jacket, lifting him up and over the side of the boat onto the deck. The dog stood on the deck, panting heavily with his tongue out as he watched his ocean friend.
The dolphin returned to the side of the boat, lifting its snout out of the water. The rescuer reached down and fed it a small fish, which the dolphin swallowed before splashing its tail and swimming away.
