An Unusual Meeting on the Curb
The fluffy white kitten pressed its paws against the concrete curb, staring intently down into the dark gap of the storm drain.
Beside the feline, a tall mother goose paced back and forth on the gray asphalt, her orange beak pointing toward the metal grate as she let out sharp, repetitive honks.
Two tiny yellow ducklings huddled close to her webbed feet, shivering slightly as they looked down into the dark hole where their sibling had just fallen.
The kitten leaned its head over the edge, twitching its ears at the faint, muffled chirping coming from deep inside the concrete chamber.
The mother goose flapped her large white wings, her neck stretching long as she honked at the cat, signaling her distress over the trapped baby.
Realizing the mother bird could not reach her baby, the white cat stood up on all fours, spun around, and sprinted away from the street toward the nearest house.
An Urgent Message at Home
Inside the quiet living room, a woman sat on her tan sofa, holding a thick book open in her lap while relaxing.
The white cat burst through the doorway, its paws padding softly across the rug before it scrambled onto the couch cushions.
The kitten stood upright on its hind legs right next to her, balancing its body against the patterned throw pillow.
It opened its mouth wide, letting out a series of sharp, vocal meows while swatting its front paw repeatedly toward the front door.
The woman’s jaw dropped in surprise, her eyes widening as she stared at her pet’s unusually dramatic and frantic movements.
She set her book down on the cushion, stood up quickly, and trailed behind the cat as it bounded across the wooden floorboards.
The kitten led her straight through the open doorway, out onto the front porch, and down the steps toward the suburban street.
Reaching Into the Dark
The woman jogged down the paved driveway, her blue pants rustling as she kept her eyes on the small white figure running ahead of her.
She arrived at the curb and dropped to her knees on the rough asphalt, leaning forward to inspect the scene.
The mother goose stood just inches away, her eyes locked on the woman as she pointed her beak down into the open drain once more.
Peering into the dark space beneath the street, the woman spotted the bright yellow feathers of the trapped baby duckling.
She rolled up her sleeve and reached her arm deep into the concrete shaft, stretching her fingers down toward the bottom of the pit.
The mother goose watched every movement, shifting her weight from side to side but allowing the human to help without attacking.
The woman’s fingers gently brushed against the soft down feathers, and she carefully scooped up the tiny, trembling creature.
A Safe Reunion
With a slow, steady motion, she pulled her arm back out of the drain and cradled the duckling in the palm of her hand.
She reached down a second time to rescue another sibling that had slipped into the opening, lifting both safely back to the surface.
She placed the tiny birds gently onto the dry asphalt, right in front of the anxious mother goose who immediately nudged them with her beak.
The duck family reunited, turning away from the curb to waddle in a neat line down the edge of the street.
The woman sat back on the concrete curb, her face relaxing into a bright smile as she looked down at her clever white cat.
She reached out her hand and gently stroked the kitten’s soft white head, her fingers scratching behind its ears while the cat closed its eyes.
