A Stranded Lamb on the Ledge
The young bighorn lamb pressed its body against the sheer rock face as tiny pebbles crumbled beneath its hooves.
A steep drop plunged hundreds of feet below the narrow ledge, offering no way down for the small animal.
High above, an adult bighorn ram stood on a flat sandstone shelf, looking down at the trapped lamb but unable to reach it.
On the canyon floor below, a park ranger stopped her patrol and lifted her binoculars to her face.
She adjusted the focus, locating the small beige shape huddled against the red rock wall.
The ranger unclipped her radio and called for backup, knowing the loose sandstone made the situation urgent.
Descending into the Canyon
Within minutes, the rescue team gathered at the top of the cliff, overlooking the vast expanse of the red canyon.
The two rangers worked together to lay out their climbing gear, running the ropes through heavy metal carabiners.
They checked the harness connections twice, ensuring the anchor points in the rock were completely secure.
The female ranger slipped on her gloves, gripped the main line, and stepped backward over the massive drop.
She rappelled down the sheer face, her heavy boots kicking up small clouds of dust as they struck the rock.
Every step down required careful placement, as the soft sandstone threatened to crumble under her weight.
Below her, the lamb looked up, its ears flat against its head as the rescuer descended closer.
The Delicate Recovery
The ranger reached the small ledge and carefully balanced her weight against the steep wall.
She pulled a green fabric transport bag from her pack and set it open on the dusty ledge.
She reached out slowly, placing one hand on the lamb’s back and the other under its chest.
The lamb’s heart beat quickly against her palm, but it did not kick or fight her grasp.
The young animal remained still as she gently lifted it and placed it inside the padded carrier.
She pulled the straps snug, securing the lamb’s body so it could not slip during the ascent.
After clipping the bag’s main carabiner directly to her own climbing harness, she looked up at the rim.
With a firm grip on the climbing rope, she began the physically demanding climb back up the cliff.
She hauled herself upward, using her legs to push off the rock while keeping the lamb steady in front of her.
A Family Reunited
Her partner pulled the slack from the safety line, keeping the rope taut as she climbed.
He reached down from the ledge to help pull the ranger and her passenger over the canyon rim.
Once on solid ground, she knelt in the dirt and unbuckled the straps of the green bag.
She gently lifted the lamb out of the carrier, setting its hooves onto the flat, safe dirt.
The lamb took a single step, paused, and then sprinted across the rocky plateau.
Two adult bighorn sheep ran forward to meet the youngster, touching noses in a quick greeting.
The three animals turned together, bounding away over the rocks and disappearing into the brush.
The ranger stood near the edge, coiling the long yellow rope into neat loops over her arm as the sun set over the canyon.
