A Tiny Fawn on the Highway Shoulder
The baby deer’s hooves clicked against the coarse grey gravel just inches away from the white line of the highway. Large semi-trucks and passenger cars roared past in a continuous blur of metal and wind, shaking the air. The tiny spotted fawn took a few tentative steps forward, its large ears twitching as each vehicle rumbled by.
It kept its gaze fixed on the asphalt, unsure of which way to turn. Its thin legs trembled slightly under its weight as it walked along the narrow strip of dirt between the fast-moving traffic and the metal guardrail.
There was no mother deer in sight, and the steep wooded hill beyond the guardrail seemed completely out of reach for the small creature. The highway was a wall of noise and speed, trapping the animal in a dangerous corridor.
A Hand Reaches Out
A patrol car pulled onto the shoulder further down, its hazard lights flashing. A police officer stepped out of the vehicle and walked slowly toward the fawn, lowering his body as he approached.
He knelt on the gravel, extending a single gloved hand toward the small snout. The fawn did not run. Instead, it stretched its neck forward, sniffing the black leather glove.
It flicked its pink tongue out, licking the officer’s hand. The officer kept his movements slow, speaking softly as the baby deer took another step closer.
With a smooth, practiced motion, the officer reached around the fawn’s body. He lifted the light animal into his chest, cradling its hindquarters and front legs securely against his uniform. The fawn remained still, its head resting near the officer’s shoulder as he walked back to his vehicle.
Assessing the Small Traveler
The officer laid out a soft fleece blanket patterned with blue paw prints on the ground beside his patrol car. He gently placed the fawn down on its side, keeping one hand on its back to keep it calm.
He began sliding his fingers down its thin legs, checking the joints for any signs of injury or stiffness. Satisfied that no bones were broken, the officer climbed into the back seat of the patrol car with the fawn.
He settled the blanket over his lap and held the small animal close as the car began to move. He used his thumb to stroke the soft fur between the fawn’s ears, and the baby’s eyes began to blink slowly in the quiet of the air-conditioned cabin.
The patrol car arrived at a wildlife rehabilitation center, where a caregiver took over. The fawn immediately went to a large ceramic bowl filled with clean water, dipping its muzzle deep into the liquid. It drank deeply, then lifted its head, letting droplets of water splash onto the straw-covered floor.
Back to the Forest
The caregiver prepared a bottle of specialized milk formula. The fawn gripped the rubber nipple eagerly, its tail stub wagging as it gulped down the meal.
The caregiver ran her gloved hands along the fawn’s neck and chest, listening closely to its breathing and checking its temperature. After a period of rest and monitoring in a secure outdoor grassy pen, the day finally arrived to return the fawn to the wild.
The fawn was transported to a wide, sunny meadow filled with tall green grass and white wildflowers. As soon as its hooves touched the soil, the fawn bounded forward, its white-spotted coat catching the sunlight as it ran deeper into the field.
A mature doe stepped out from the treeline at the edge of the meadow. The fawn slowed its pace, walking gently toward her. The two deer leaned their heads together, touching their noses in the warm afternoon sun.
