Professional Mocked For Believing A Judge Was Only The Janitor

The Lobby Floor

The mop head pushed water across the stone floor. An older man in gray coveralls moved the handle back and forth. His movements were steady. People in suits walked past him without looking. They carried briefcases and leather folders. The marble reflected the overhead lights as the wet strings left streaks on the floor.

A young man stopped suddenly. He wore a white shirt and a dark tie. His face tightened as he looked at the man with the mop. He did not slow down to avoid the water. He stepped right into the wet area. He looked at his shoes and then at the worker. The lobby was full of people moving toward the elevators.

The young man began to yell. He asked the worker what he was doing. He stated that cleaners should use the back entrance. He did not wait for an answer. He stood close to the man in the gray uniform. The older man did not stop his work immediately. He kept his hands on the wooden mop handle.

The Confrontation Begins

The man in the coveralls looked up. He said he was simply doing his job. This response made the young man’s face turn red. He raised his voice louder. He told the worker his only job was to stay out of the way. He claimed the worker did not belong in the building at all. A small crowd of people in suits stopped to watch.

The older man stood still. He held the mop in one hand. He told the young man to verify who he was talking to. He suggested the young man might regret his words. The young man did not listen. He took a step forward. He pointed a finger inches from the older man’s chest. He told him to act like a janitor.

The young man’s voice echoed in the marble hall. He gave what he called a last warning. He told the worker to leave the building immediately. He gripped a leather folder tightly in his other hand. The people watching remained silent. Two police officers stood in the background. They did not move toward the argument.

The Truth Revealed

The older man did not leave. He reached into his gray coverall pocket. He pulled out a black leather case. He flipped it open with one hand. Inside was a silver badge and a government ID card. He held it up level with the young man’s eyes. The young man’s jaw loosened. He stopped talking mid-sentence.

The man introduced himself as Judge Williams. He stated the courthouse was his judicial division. The young man took a half-step back. His shoulders slumped toward the floor. He pulled his hands back and let them hang at his sides. He looked at the badge and then at the mop bucket. He whispered an apology.

The judge pointed his finger at the lawyer. He said the man had failed the simplest test. He told him to judge facts instead of job titles. The young man did not look up again. He stared at the wet marble. The police officers and other staff members watched from the edges of the room. Nobody spoke as the judge lowered the badge.

The judge gripped the wooden handle again. He leaned into the mop and pushed it forward. The gray strings moved through the soapy water. The young man stood perfectly still near the yellow bucket. The judge moved the mop around the lawyer’s black shoes and continued cleaning the floor.
