A Devoted Guardian on the Hot Asphalt
The white goose stretched its neck toward the sky and let out a sharp honk as the front bumper of a white SUV came to a halt inches from its beak.
Directly beneath the bird, another goose lay flat on its side on the dark road, its neck stretched limp and its webbed feet splayed uselessly across the rough asphalt.
The sun beat down on the blacktop, sending waves of heat radiating upward around the two birds as they sat exposed in the middle of the empty lane.
Despite the massive metal grille of the vehicle looming over them, the upright goose refused to take a single step backward into the safety of the grassy shoulder.
It flapped its wings slightly, ruffled its chest feathers, and let out another raspy cry, keeping its body positioned directly between the heavy tire of the car and its motionless partner.
The driver of the white vehicle slowly backed up, steering around the pair, but the danger of the open road remained high.
Moments later, a dark SUV approached from the opposite direction, its headlights glinting in the midday sun as it rolled toward the blockage.
Once again, the standing goose raised its chin, opened its orange beak wide, and hissed at the oncoming grill, standing its ground firmly.
A Stranger Steps Into the Road
The dark SUV came to a stop a few feet away, its engine idling with a low rumble, and the driver’s side door swung open.
A man wearing a white polo shirt and blue jeans stepped out onto the road, holding a clear plastic bottle of water in his right hand.
He walked slowly toward the geese, keeping his hands low and his movements steady so as not to startle the protective bird into flight.
The standing goose watched him closely, its dark eyes tracking his progress as he neared them, but it did not retreat.
The man bent his knees and lowered himself onto the hot asphalt, bringing his face level with the collapsed bird, which lay completely still.
He unscrewed the blue plastic cap of the water bottle, exposing the clear liquid inside.
Gently, he tilted the mouth of the bottle toward the limp goose’s dry beak, letting a steady trickle of water run down the side of its face and into its mouth.
At first, the collapsed goose did not move, its eyes remaining closed and its white feathers dusty against the dark ground.
The Cool Water Works Its Magic
The man tilted the bottle further, splashing more water directly onto the bird’s head and neck to shock its system.
A tiny shudder ran through the goose’s frame, and its dark eyes slowly fluttered open as the moisture sank in.
Slowly, the limp neck began to curve, pulling the heavy beak up from the asphalt as the bird swallowed the cool liquid.
The man tilted the bottle over the goose’s back, soaking its white feathers to help lower its body temperature against the midday heat.
The goose propped its chest up, shifting its weight onto its breast as the water pooled on the blacktop beneath it.
Its protective partner took a step closer, its loud honking finally subsiding into quiet murmurs as it watched the recovery unfold.
The man reached down with both hands, sliding his palms under the revived goose’s wings to support its weak legs.
He lifted the bird gently, placing a clear plastic container filled with clean water on the asphalt right in front of its beak.
The goose immediately dipped its orange bill deep into the container, scooping up mouthfuls of water and tilting its head back to swallow.
The man kept his hands steady on the bird’s sides, petting its wet feathers as the other goose settled onto the road right beside them, tucking its feet under its body.
