The Unspoken Standard
The lawyer jabbed his index finger inches from the woman’s face as she gripped her yellow mop handle.
Her knuckles turned pale against the smooth wooden shaft, but her gaze remained fixed on the man standing before her.
He leaned his torso forward, his jaw tight as he spat out his words, commanding her to get out of his path.
Around them, the courthouse lobby was filled with people in dark suits, all rushing toward the heavy wooden doors of the various courtrooms.
The woman, dressed in a plain grey short-sleeved jumpsuit with a small plastic name tag, did not move her mop an inch.
Instead, she took a slow, deep breath, her chest rising and falling beneath the fabric of her work uniform.
“Please watch your step, counselor,” she said, keeping her voice quiet but perfectly steady.
The man in the blue suit let out a sharp, dry laugh, a sound that immediately caused several nearby citizens to turn their heads.
An Unexpected Confrontation
He adjusted the knot of his dark red tie and stepped even closer, his leather shoes nearly touching the wheels of her yellow plastic bucket.
“People like you should know your place,” he muttered, gesturing toward the polished marble floor beneath his feet.
A few onlookers stopped in their tracks, their briefcases hanging loosely at their sides as they watched the intense exchange unfold.
The woman did not retreat, keeping both of her feet planted firmly on the cold stone floor.
The lawyer took a step as if to walk away, but then spun back around, his eyes narrowing as he blocked her path once more.
He raised his voice, asserting that she was just a cleaner and would never sit with people of his standing inside the courtroom doors.
The woman remained silent, her expression remaining entirely calm despite the harsh words thrown her way.
The Reveal Beneath the Uniform
A bailiff stepped forward near the courtroom entrance, his hands clasped securely in front of his belt as he looked out over the lobby.
He cleared his throat, his voice suddenly booming across the high-ceilinged room, calling for everyone to rise for the Chief Justice.
The lawyer smirked, waiting for the custodian to finally gather her cleaning supplies and scurry away to the side of the hall.
Instead, the woman slowly lifted her hand to the collar of her grey jumpsuit.
With a smooth, deliberate motion, she unzipped the front of the work uniform, letting the heavy grey fabric slide down her arms.
Beneath the rough cotton sat a long, black judicial robe, complete with a clean white collar and a delicate pearl necklace resting against her neck.
The lawyer’s smirk vanished instantly, his mouth falling open as his raised arm dropped limp to his side.
Two women in the crowd gasped, their hands instantly flying up to cover their open mouths as they realized who they were looking at.
A Final Judgment
The man in the blue suit took a hesitant step back, his chin dropping toward his chest as his eyes darted from her robes to the floor.
The Chief Justice did not say another word to him in the lobby, turning on her heel and walking through the large double doors of the courtroom.
Inside the room, the man sat at the defense table, his fingers nervously tapping against his leather folder as he waited for the proceedings to begin.
Chief Justice Elizabeth Carter took her seat behind the elevated wooden bench, adjusting the wooden gavel in front of her.
The courtroom was completely silent as she looked down at the lawyer from her elevated seat.
The man’s shoulders slumped, and he kept his eyes lowered, staring directly at the gold-embossed seal of the court on the wall behind her bench.
