An Unexpected Obstacle on the Mountain Pass
The bright red feathers of the male northern cardinal pressed flat against the rough, dusty gravel of the mountain road. Its chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow bursts as cars rushed past on the hot asphalt just inches away, kicking up small clouds of dust.
Next to the fallen bird, a small huddle of four brown sparrows stood in a tight circle. Their beaks stretched wide toward the sky, emitting quiet chirps while keeping close to their brightly colored companion.
A thick, coarse white cord wrapped multiple times around both of the cardinal’s thin legs, binding them together in a tight knot and pinning the bird flat to the ground. It could not stand, let alone take flight to escape the oncoming traffic or predators.
A black SUV slowed down and coasted onto the gravel shoulder, its tires crunching against the loose stones before coming to a complete stop. The driver’s side door swung open.
Working to Unbind the Trapped Bird
A man wearing a red t-shirt and blue jeans stepped out of the vehicle and walked toward the edge of the asphalt. He lowered his body, dropping his knees onto the dusty gravel to get closer to the huddle of birds.
The sparrows fluttered back a few inches but did not fly away, remaining close as the man extended his hands. He slid his fingers beneath the cardinal’s bright red belly, lifting the bird gently from the dirt.
He inspected the tight knots of the white string constricting the bird’s legs. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a pair of green-handled scissors.
Holding the bird secure with his left hand, he carefully slid the metal blade of the scissors beneath the bound fibers of the cord. With a quick snip, the tension in the string released, and the cut rope fell away into the dirt.
The cardinal immediately shifted its weight, pulling its legs beneath its body. It sat upright on the gravel, its black-masked face turning side to side as it adjusted to its sudden freedom.
A Cool Drink and a Handful of Seeds
The man reached for a clear plastic water bottle. He tilted the bottle forward, letting a thin, steady stream of water splash directly over the cardinal’s head and beak.
The bird tilted its head back, opening its dark beak to catch the dripping moisture. It shook its wet feathers, sending tiny droplets scattering onto the dry roadside soil.
Next, the man reached into a small bag and poured a mound of golden grain and seeds directly into his open palm. He extended his hand forward, lowering it to the level of the gravel.
The red cardinal hopped forward across the dirt, completely focused on the offering. It began rapidly pecking at the pile of grain, swallowing the seeds one by one as the man smiled and watched quietly.
Seeing this, one of the young brown sparrows hopped closer, its tiny feet scraping the gravel. It reached its beak into the man’s open palm, joining the cardinal in eating the shared meal.
The man sat perfectly still on the roadside, his palm flat and steady as the small brown sparrow dipped its head into the man’s palm, swallowing the last few golden grains of seed.
