A Dangerous Situation By The Highway
A white duck stood trapped in netting along a busy roadside, surrounded by four small yellow ducklings.
Cars sped past on the asphalt just inches away, kicking up dust and wind across the shoulder.
The duck flapped her wings and opened her beak, unable to break free from the mesh tangled around her back and legs.
A Driver Steps In To Help
A silver sedan pulled over onto the gravel shoulder nearby.
An elderly man stepped out of the driver’s door and walked toward the fence line.
He lowered himself onto his knees right on the dirt directly in front of the distressed mother duck.
Untangling The Mesh
The man reached out both hands and grabbed the green netting draped over the duck’s back.
He worked the fine strands gently over her head and lifted the mesh off her shoulders.
The tiny yellow ducklings huddled against her side as he untangled the final threads from her tail.
Free To Walk Away
Once freed, the duck stood tall and flapped her wings cleanly in the air.
The man rested his hand on his thigh and gestured toward the safety of the field.
He smiled and waved goodbye as the mother duck turned around and led her four ducklings into the safety of the tall grass.
