A Sudden Grab On The Sidewalk
A young man in a black shirt lunged forward and snatched the brown leather handbag straight off the old woman’s lap.
The woman jerked backward in her wheelchair, her fingers clawing at the empty air where her purse had sat just a second prior.
Her golden retriever leaped up from the pavement, let out a volley of sharp barks, and scampered down the sidewalk after the retreating figure.
The man sprinted past parked cars and turned a sharp corner into a narrow alleyway, disappearing from view before anyone on the street could react.
Left alone on the sidewalk, the old woman rested her trembling forearms against her knees and covered her face with both hands.
Small gasps shook her shoulders as she sat slumped in the wheelchair beside her cardboard sign and metal tin.
A Meeting In The Alleyway
Around the corner, the man dropped down onto the cold pavement of the brick alleyway, unzipping a large backpack beside him.
The golden retriever trotted into the alley, tail wagging, and sat directly across from him without a single growl.
The man reached into a takeout container sitting on the ground and pulled out a fried chicken drumstick, offering it gently to the dog’s mouth.
The golden retriever took the food with soft teeth and began chewing, settling down comfortably on the asphalt next to the brown bag.
With the dog calmly eating beside him, the man unzipped his own heavy canvas backpack and reached deep into the main compartment.
He pulled out a thick, bound stack of fresh paper banknotes and held it in his hand, looking down at the brown purse lying between his knees.
He unzipped the flap of the purse and carefully slid the thick stack of money inside, fitting it neatly into the interior pocket.
After pulling the zipper shut, he looped the sturdy double handles of the brown purse around the golden retriever’s jaws.
Returning To The Corner
The dog stood up on four paws, holding the weight of the leather bag firmly in its teeth, and turned back toward the main street.
With measured steps, the golden retriever trotted out of the alleyway, carrying the purse high off the pavement as it navigated the sidewalk.
The old woman remained seated in her wheelchair, her hands still pressed against her eyes, when she felt a soft nudge against her blanketed knees.
She lowered her palms and looked down to see her dog standing directly in front of her, holding the brown purse by its leather straps.
A wide grin broke across her face as she reached out and pulled the straps from the dog’s mouth, clutching the bag against her chest.
Unzipping The Contents
She unlatched the front buckle of the purse and reached her fingers down into the main compartment to check inside.
Her fingers brushed against a thick, crisp block of paper that had not been there when the bag was taken from her lap.
She pulled out the massive stack of paper bills, holding the thick bundle with both hands as her jaw drifted open.
Tears welled in the corners of her eyes as she looked back and forth between the money in her hands and the golden retriever standing at her knee.
The dog rested its head against the side of her wheelchair, tail sweeping across the concrete pavement as she cradled the stack of cash against her jacket.
