Stranded In The Deep Woods After A Sudden Dangerous Fall

A Sudden Slip In The Mud

Sarah’s boots lost their grip on the wet soil, sending her sliding down the steep dirt embankment into a tangle of exposed roots and sharp branches.

Her fingers clutched at the muddy earth as her back hit the bottom of the ravine, leaving her pinned beneath the damp undergrowth.

At the top of the ridge, her golden retriever, Rusty, peered over the edge with his ears pinned forward, watching her struggle to sit upright.

Pain flared through her leg every time she shifted, making it impossible to climb back toward the trail above.

Guarding Her Through The Cold

Rusty picked his way down the slippery slope, digging his paws into the loose mud until he reached her side.

As daylight vanished behind the thick canopy of fir trees, the temperature plunged, turning Sarah’s breath into white mist.

She pulled a thin emergency foil blanket around her shoulders and drew Rusty against her chest.

The dog tucked his chin over her arm, pressing his warm body against her shivering frame throughout the long, dark hours under the massive pine trunk.

Guiding Help Along The Trail

When the first rays of morning light broke through the forest branches, Rusty stood up, shook the damp dirt from his coat, and trotted back toward the footpath.

Two backpackers were hiking down the muddy trail when Rusty approached them, barking softly and turning his head back toward the tree line.

The hikers stopped, watched the dog take a few steps down the slope, and followed his lead through the thick brush.

A search and rescue team arrived shortly after, wrapping Sarah in fresh thermal blankets while checking her injured leg against the base of the pine tree.

Medics secured her onto a wheeled stretcher and loaded her into the back of an ambulance parked along the dirt access road as Rusty stood watch by the rear bumper.

Waiting At The Glass Doors

Inside the hospital room, doctors set Sarah’s leg in a secure cast and monitored her recovery while she rested against the pillows.

Outside the front entrance of the hospital building, Rusty sat upright on the concrete pavement, his gaze fixed on the sliding glass doors day after day.

A few days later, the automatic doors slid open, and Sarah stepped through the doorway balancing on a pair of silver crutches.

Rusty sprang forward across the sidewalk, his tail whipping back and forth as Sarah dropped her weight onto the crutches and buried both hands into the thick fur around his neck, whispering, “Hey buddy, I’m home.”
