A Shadow Across The Tracks
A young woman lay completely still across two parallel steel rails as a blue passenger train rolled out from the archway of a stone tunnel.
Her head rested against the coarse stone ballast while her dark brown hair fan-spread onto the gravel below.
Her hands remained folded across the center of her green wool sweater, her eyes shut tightly as the metal wheels hummed along the track toward her.
A short distance away along the dirt path bordering a golden wheat field, a German Shepherd trotted alongside his owner.
The dog paused mid-step, his head snapping toward the center of the railway line.
His ears stood upright, shifting to catch the low rumble vibrating through the ground.
Rushing To The Scene
The man in the rust-colored jacket stopped his boots on the gravel trail and looked down the line.
His mouth opened slightly as he saw the form lying motionless in front of the oncoming train.
He unclipped the leash from his hand and moved forward into a heavy run across the uneven rocks.
The German Shepherd charged ahead of him, leaping over the wooden ties and landing directly beside the woman’s chest.
The dog pressed his nose into the side of her neck, nudging her cheek repeatedly with small, insistent pushes.
When she did not stir, the dog lifted his head toward the tunnel and let out three loud, echoey barks.
Stopping The Approaching Train
The man reached the track edge, unzipping his outer jacket as he ran.
He pulled the garment off his shoulders and raised it with both hands high into the air.
He swung the jacket from side to side, shouting toward the train cab as the blue nose of the engine drew closer.
The train’s headlight glinted against the steel tracks, its metallic braking whine sounding out across the quiet countryside.
A railway safety worker wearing a bright orange high-visibility jacket arrived from the edge of the access road.
He bent down beside the woman’s upper body while the dog’s owner positioned himself at her feet.
The two men slipped their arms beneath her back, torso, and legs, hoisting her off the metal rails in one fluid motion.
Relief On The Grass
They moved rapidly down the slope of the gravel embankment into the tall green grass beside the field.
The German Shepherd followed closely, keeping his snout inches from her face while the men carried her clear of the tracks.
They gently lowered her onto the lawn a safe distance from the idling locomotive.
The dog immediately lowered his head to her cheek, licking her skin until her eyes fluttered open.
Her fingers reached out, tangling into the thick brown and black fur at the dog’s neck as her breathing stabilized.
Reunited At The Platform
A short while later, the blue train sat idling beside the brick platform of a rural railway station.
The sun cast a warm golden light across the stone walkway and the autumn trees framing the building.
The woman knelt on the cobblestones in a soft cream sweater, burying her face against the German Shepherd’s shoulder while holding him in a tight hug.
The dog leaned his weight against her chest, his tongue resting out as the man stood a step behind them with a warm smile on his face.
