A Hurried Encounter on the Sidewalk
A young man wearing a plain white t-shirt and light blue jeans checked his wristwatch while walking along a crowded city sidewalk.
Pedestrians moved past shop windows in both directions as he maintained a steady, quick pace down the concrete walkway.
An older man sat on the pavement against a grey building façade, wearing a worn jacket with frayed seams at the shoulder.
He held a clear plastic cup with both hands, lifting his head as the younger man approached his spot on the ground.
The older man asked if he could spare some water, holding the empty cup steady in his hands.
The younger man stopped walking and looked down at the seated man for a brief second.
He raised his right hand with his palm facing outward, shaking his head gently while uttering a quick apology.
He explained that he was in a hurry, turned around, and resumed his path along the sidewalk without stopping again.
The older man let his chin drop toward his chest, looking down at his empty cup as foot traffic continued around him.
Pausing at the Cafe
A short time later, the same young man walked toward an outdoor cafe table positioned along the sidewalk.
He now wore a denim jacket over his white t-shirt as he stepped up to a round metal table.
He placed a smartphone onto the metallic surface next to a tall plastic cup filled with an iced coffee drink.
The drink was topped with whipped cream, caramel drizzle, and a bright green straw piercing the domed plastic lid.
He pulled out a chair, sat down, and stared directly at the layered beverage sitting in front of him.
He rested his hands on the edge of the metal table, tilting his head slightly while looking at the cup.
His eyes shifted away from the drink, looking out toward the street where cars and pedestrians passed by.
He sat silently for several seconds, looking down at his lap before standing up from the metal chair.
Leaving the table behind, he turned back in the direction from which he had come.
Returning to the Bench
The young man walked along a quiet side street until he spotted the older man sitting on a concrete bench against a red brick wall.
The older man sat quietly with his hands resting in his lap, still wearing his frayed grey suit jacket.
The younger man approached him carrying a sealed clear plastic water bottle with a white cap and a brown paper food bag.
He bent his knees slightly as he reached out, extending both items directly toward the older man.
The older man looked up in surprise, opening his mouth slightly before reaching out his hands to receive the items.
He took the cold water bottle in one hand and held the brown paper bag securely with the other.
He reached inside the brown bag and pulled out a freshly made sandwich wrapped in paper.
A Shared Conversation
The older man held the sandwich in both hands, looking up into the face of the young man standing before him.
The younger man lifted his right hand to touch the back of his neck, leaning his shoulder slightly forward.
He spoke directly to the seated stranger, maintaining eye contact as he stood on the concrete walkway.
The older man smiled, lifting the sandwich closer to his chest while holding the water bottle under his arm.
The younger man stepped closer to the bench and placed his left hand gently onto the older man’s jacket shoulder.
The older man unwrapped the top of the sandwich and took a bite, looking up with a gentle smile.
The younger man kept his hand resting on the jacketed shoulder as pedestrians walked past the brick building in the background.
