A Confrontation At The Cemetery Gate
An elderly man dressed in a dark blue military service uniform walked slowly along the paved path, holding a triangularly folded American flag against his ribs. His navy cap sat square on his gray head, and silver ribbons glinted across his chest.
A younger soldier wearing camouflage fatigues and dark sunglasses stepped into the middle of the roadway, extending a palm to block the older man’s path.
The guard leaned forward, pressing his hand against the veteran’s forearm to halt his progress completely.
He told the older man that he was not permitted to enter the grounds.
A Demand For Proof
The veteran reached with his free hand into his coat pocket and withdrew a small, plastic military identification card. He held it up between his thumb and forefinger, directly at eye level.
The guard snatched the card, inspected the front and back, and then pointed a finger toward the cemetery rows.
He raised his voice, demanding that the man prove his right to be present at the ceremony.
The veteran adjusted his grip on the folded flag, stating that he had served on those grounds long before the younger man had ever put on a uniform.
The guard shouted back, telling the senior veteran not to lecture him and calling out for others to clear the man away from the ceremony area.
A General Intervenes
A high-ranking Air Force general standing nearby turned his head sharply toward the commotion. His eyes widened under the brim of his dress cap as he took in the scene.
The veteran looked past the guard’s shoulder and addressed the general by rank, asking if he remembered him.
The guard turned toward the general, asking if there was any personal connection between them.
The general stepped between the two men, pointing a finger directly into the guard’s face while his jaw worked open and shut. He shouted that the veteran had personally trained the very instructors who had educated him years before.
He reminded the guard that this man had commanded the entire base during wartime operations.
Honoring A Military Leader
The guard’s shoulders dropped, and he lowered his chin toward his chest, stepping back onto the grass.
The general turned toward the long lines of troops standing among the white headstones. He brought both hands up to his mouth and shouted a command across the field.
Instantly, rows of soldiers in camouflage snapped their boots together, thrusting their chests out and standing straight.
The general fell into step beside the veteran, walking shoulder-to-shoulder with him down the central aisle toward the burial site.
An honor guard dressed in dark uniforms brought their rifles up in unison, pointing the barrels skyward to discharge a ceremonial volley.
The camera pulled back into an overhead shot of the entire cemetery field, where dozens of soldiers stood beside white headstones in neat, square rows, holding hand salutes around the brown wooden casket.
