An Unexpected Visitor at the Table
The man lifted a forkful of food toward his mouth when a golden retriever pressed its front paws against the edge of the wooden café table. He paused, resting his fork near the plate, and reached out with his right hand.
His fingers stroked the dog’s golden fur behind her ears. The dog leaned into his palm, her tail sweeping across the damp sidewalk tiles before she stepped back down onto all fours.
Instead of turning back to his salad, the man stood up from his chair. He walked away from the outdoor patio, stepping along the city street as the retriever trotted steadily ahead of him.
A Hidden Nest in the Narrow Alley
The dog turned sharply into a dim, wet brick alleyway lined with trash bins. A few yards down the narrow passage, three tiny golden puppies lay curled together on a flattened piece of cardboard.
The mother dog approached the makeshift bed and nudged each puppy with her wet nose. She folded her legs underneath her body and began licking their faces, pulling them closer against her flank.
The puppies whimpered softly, shifting against the cardboard as their mother rested her chin over their small shoulders. Footsteps echoed from the entrance of the alley as the man reappeared, carrying a large brown bag of dry dog food under his arm.
Dinner Served on the Alley Pavement
He crouched down beside the cardboard nest and set the bag upright on the ground. The mother dog rose, stepping toward him with her tail wagging in wide, low circles as she nuzzled his jacket.
The man tipped the bag forward, pouring a mound of kibble directly onto the damp pavement in front of the puppies. He kept one hand steady on the bag until a generous pile formed between the pups and their mother.
The three puppies scrambled forward on their short paws, pressing their snouts into the center of the kibble pile beside their mother. The man stood up, placed his hands on his hips, and watched the four dogs eat together in the quiet alley.
