An Urgent Discovery
The small terrier pressed both front paws against the dark metal slats of the park bin, stretching his neck toward the black plastic bundle balanced on top.
A man in a green hooded sweatshirt had just tossed the knotted sack onto the rim before jogging away down the paved path.
The dog stood upright on two legs, sniffing the plastic knot and letting out sharp, rhythmic barks.
He spun around on the gravel, looked back toward the trees, and took off running at full speed.
Alerting Help
An elderly man with white hair sat quietly on a wooden bench nearby, leaning against the slats in the afternoon sun.
The terrier skidded to a stop right at his feet and planted his front paws firmly onto the man’s knees.
He barked repeatedly, jumping down and taking two quick strides toward the path before looking over his shoulder.
The older man pressed his palms onto his knees and pushed himself up from the bench.
He hurried along the dirt path, keeping pace right behind the terrier’s wagging tail.
Unwrapping The Bundle
The dog reached the metal receptacle first, circling its base and whining as he looked up.
The elderly man reached out, grabbed the top edges of the heavy plastic sack, and lowered it gently onto the paved walkway.
He knelt down on the asphalt, placing his knees on either side of the dark material.
His fingers worked through the tight knot at the opening, pulling the gathered plastic apart.
As the bag opened wide, a tiny black-and-white puppy poked its head up into the daylight, blinking against the sun.
The terrier immediately lowered his snout, pressing his nose against the puppy’s forehead with gentle sniffs.
Safe On The Bench
The man scooped the small puppy into his arms, gathering the tiny paws against his chest.
He walked back to the wooden bench and sat down, cradling the newcomer while smoothing down its dark fur.
The terrier placed his front paws onto the bench seat, stretching up until his nose touched the puppy’s chin.
In the distance along the grassy field, a park ranger in uniform walked along the tree line toward the bench where the trio sat together.
