A Stand On The Dirt Road
The impala lowered its chin, pointing two long curved horns straight into the charging dog’s chest.
Paws skidded through dry orange sand just inches from the front bumper of the safari vehicle.
Between the adult’s slender legs, a newborn calf scrambled to find footing on the road’s deep ruts.
Five mottled wild dogs darted inward from both sides of the roadway, kicking up plumes of red dust.
The larger impala lunged forward with a sharp, downward thrust of its neck.
One dog rolled across the dirt, scrambling backward on all fours to regain its footing near the scrub.
The pack leader snapped its jaws in the air, shifting its weight rapidly from side to side.
Each time the predators crept a step closer, the impala flared its nostrils and stomped a hoof into the dust.
Holding The Perimeter
The pack split into two arcs, trying to circle behind the defender’s flank.
Every time a dog leaned inward, the impala pivoted on its rear hooves and swept its head across the path.
The black tips of its horns sliced within inches of the lead dog’s muzzle.
The small calf pressed its flank tightly against the adult’s rear legs, tucking its ears and chin low to the ground.
A dog lunged from the left ditch, extending its neck toward the calf’s shoulder.
The adult wheeled around instantly, driving its front hooves into the dirt and ramming forward with full body weight.
The predator twisted mid-air to dodge the sweeping tips, landing hard on its side in the dry grass.
The impala remained planted directly over the calf, muscles taut across its shoulders and ribcage.
Two more dogs advanced from the right, testing the distance with quick, shallow steps.
The adult thrust its horns low once more, tossing loose dirt directly into their path until both dogs backed away.
The Tide Breaks
Dust settled over the road as the dogs regrouped ten feet away in the scrub.
The impala did not give up an inch of ground.
Instead, it took two aggressive strides forward, stomping both front hooves hard into the packed track.
The lead dog paused, its ears pinning flat against its skull as its hind legs backed toward the bush.
Another dog turned around and trotted into the tall grass, followed quickly by the rest of the pack.
The predators broke into a run, heading toward the scattered acacia trees in the distance.
The dirt road fell completely clear as the shapes of the wild dogs shrunk against the distant horizon.
Returning To The Plain
The adult turned its head back toward the calf, touching its muzzle against the small animal’s neck.
The calf dropped its front knees onto the dirt road, resting its chest on the warm sand.
The adult bent its neck, gently nudging the young one’s ribs with the flat side of its nose.
The calf pushed against the ground with its hind legs, wobbling slightly before finding balance.
The adult took a slow step forward, scanning both sides of the open grassland.
Both animals turned side by side toward the grassy plain away from the vehicle.
They broke into a steady trot, their tails flicking back and forth as they disappeared into the green shrubs.
