Driver Faces Relentless Golden Retriever Refusing To Clear The Driveway

The Dog on the Driveway

The man adjusted his rearview mirror with his right hand and shifted the sedan into drive.

Through the windshield, a golden retriever sat upright on the manicured green lawn, his ears perked toward the hum of the engine.

The man smiled through the glass, calling out through the open window to ask if his companion was ready for the day.

As the sedan rolled forward a few feet, the dog sprang from the grass in a blur of golden fur.

He planted all four paws directly on the cracked concrete of the driveway, standing square against the front bumper.

The driver gripped the steering wheel, stomping his foot onto the brake pedal as the car lurched to a halt inches away from the dog’s chest.

“Bruno, stop!” the man called out, his eyes wide behind the wheel.

Refusing to Budge

The dog stood firm, his dark eyes fixed on the man behind the glass.

The driver rolled down the driver-side window and leaned his head out into the morning air.

“What are you doing, boy?” he asked, waving one hand outward to gesture the dog aside.

The retriever took two quick paces toward the door, tilted his muzzle upward, and barked sharply.

“What is it, Bruno?” the man chuckled, shaking his head. “Come on, Bruno. I’m already late.”

Instead of retreating to the grass, the golden retriever lunged upward, placing both front paws directly onto the metal driver-side door panel.

His claws tapped against the grey paint as he barked repeatedly, pressing his weight into the car door.

The driver let out a breath, pulled his hands from the steering wheel, and unlatched the seatbelt.

He pushed the car door open, planted his brown shoes on the driveway, and stood up beside the dog.

Looking Under the Hood

The retriever backed away toward the front bumper, sitting down and keeping his gaze locked on the vehicle’s grille.

The man walked past the driver’s side to the front of the sedan and released the latch under the hood.

He lifted the heavy metal hood upward, propping it open to reveal the engine bay.

Resting his hands on the frame, he leaned forward and inspected the belts, hoses, and wiring.

The dog sat quietly on the concrete beside the front tire, watching his owner examine the machinery.

The man pulled a smartphone from his pocket, brought the receiver to his ear, and spoke quietly while looking down into the engine compartment.

Shortly after, a mechanic in a dark navy jumpsuit arrived on the driveway carrying a diagnostic tool.

The mechanic leaned over the open engine bay, pointing his fingers toward a component deep inside the compartment while the owner stood back with folded arms.

The mechanic straightened his back, wiped his hands, and turned his head toward the driver.

“It’s good you called,” the mechanic said, gesturing toward the engine block. “Driving this could have caused a serious accident.”

The driver’s jaw dropped, his eyes widening in shock as he looked back and forth between the mechanic and the dog sitting beside his feet.

A Long Embrace on the Concrete

The man took two slow steps back from the front bumper, his gaze drifting down to the retriever.

He dropped to his knees on the concrete driveway, resting his palms flat against the dog’s thick coat.

Pulling the retriever close, he buried his face into the golden fur around the dog’s neck.

His fingers curled into the fur along the dog’s shoulders, holding him tight against his white collared shirt.

“You didn’t know how to tell me,” the man whispered, his head resting against the dog’s warm brow. “You just refused to let me leave.”

The golden retriever leaned his weight back into the man’s chest, his golden tail sweeping back and forth against the concrete driveway.

As the man loosened his grip, the dog raised his muzzle and gently licked the side of his owner’s face.
